Super Computer and not so super Mark Lawrenson predict Newcastle v Southampton
Mark Lawrenson has been previewing Newcastle v Southampton.
Saturday’s late kick-off involving clubs 15th and 16th in the table.
Despite that, the two teams are in good form.
Newcastle winning five home games in a row until Crystal Palace won with their only effort on target.
Whilst Southampton have won four of their last six, home and away.
Between them the two clubs have scored 23 goals in these 12 matches, giving hope of some goals in the Tyneside sunshine.
Mark Lawrenson has been impressed by Southampton recently and thinks they will stay up but believes it will be a 2-1 win to Newcastle.
Whilst NUFC have a terrible record down at Southampton, it is the opposite on Tyneside.
Only once since 1996/97 have the Saints taken all three points.
Lawrenson is usually competing with a celebrity with his predictions but this time it is a ‘super computer’ called RED.
The complex model has been developed by University of Reading experts and uses a sophisticated metric that factors in historic results, managerial changes and even travel distances for each team to calculate the most probable results.
RED has also gone for a Newcastle win: 1-0.
Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport:
“I have seen quite a bit of Southampton recently and they are playing well.
“They are not quite safe yet but one more win should do it.
“I don’t think they will get it at St James’ Park but ultimately I think both teams will be fine in terms of staying up.
“Prediction is Newcastle 2 Southampton 1.”
