Stunning Rafa Benitez 13 and 25 match Newcastle United form tables show Top 4/Top 7 potential
What could be possible with Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United?
As Southampton were dispatched on Saturday, over 50,000 fans made clear just how much they want him to stay.
However, the absent Mike Ashley wasn’t there to hear it.
Not that it would make any difference if he had been inside St James Park.
What he sees and thinks about the football club bears no relation to what the rest of us do.
So, if either the NUFC owner left (preferably), or changed his ways, what would Rafa Benitez be capable of at St James Park with some realistic backing?
Look at these two form tables (tables via Transfermarkt).
One covers results since the start of November (last 25 matches) and the second one is from mid-January (last 13 games):
From matchday 11 (1-0 win over Watford) up to matchday 35 (3-1 win over Arsenal):
From matchday 23 (3-0 win over Cardiff) up to matchday 35 (3-1 win over Arsenal):
The latter table shows Newcastle in the top four Champions League placings and whilst Man Utd do have a game left to play, that is against Man City this midweek with Guardiola’s men heavy favourites. So the odds are that NUFC will stay in that fourth form spot.
The 25 game form table is maybe even more amazing, even though Newcastle are three places lower.
For Rafa Benitez to have this underfunded squad the best of the rest and only eight points off the top four in that period (although the ones above do have a game in hand) is truly remarkable.
The NUFC manager couldn’t have been messed about more by Mike Ashley last summer.
The owner’s insistence on making a profit in that transfer window and delaying signings such as Rondon until the very end of the window, meant a chaotic summer preparation.
Imagine what would be possible if Rafa was given decent money to spend AND the freedom to go for whoever he wants, when he wants to?
