Reported Newcastle United offer for Edin Dzeko – Unlikely
Monday has brought claims from Italy of a bid by Newcastle United to buy Edin Dzeko.
The Bosnia-Herzegovina striker has been a superb signing for Roma and has scored 60 goals in 107 Serie A starts (plus 21 sub appearances).
With 23 goals in European competition in three years, including 15 in the Champions League, it rubber stamps his impact.
However, very difficult to see any substance in the Newcastle claims.
It is TMW who have run the story and they claim the Magpies have offered 10m euros (£8.5m) for the forward, who this season has got 7 goals in 20 Serie A starts (4 sub appearances) plus 5 goals in the Champions League.
Edin Dzeko has only one year left on his contract and TMW say that Roma are looking to sell this summer but are looking at a very unlikely 25m euros (£21.4m) for the forward.
Very unlikely to get that kind of return for a 33 year old but even less likely that Mike Ashley would agree to offer even £8.5m for a 33 year old. Especially as Dzeko is reported to be Roma’s top wage earner.
Newcastle fans saw Ashley refuse to allow Rafa Benitez to meet the £16.5m release clause for Salomon Rondon last summer, so with the loan striker set to turn 30 in September, it looks even less likely.
Ironically, Edin Dzeko joined Roma as a 30 year old from Man City for £10m in 2016 and has shown just what brilliant value a 30 year old striker can be.
Hopefully Mike Ashley takes note with regard to Rondon.
