Rafa Benitez has met with the media.

The manager speaking to journalists ahead of the trip to Leicester.

The pre-match press conference a day earlier than normal as the game is on Friday night.

The NUFC boss confirmed that only long-term injured Longstaff and Lejeune were definitely ruled out, Diame back training after a problem with his hip.

No surprises though that top of the agenda for the media was Rafa’s future.

Only four weeks now until the final game of his current contract and the Newcastle manager having said last week that he had made clear to Mike Ashley and his minions, what he wanted guaranteed before he signed a new deal.

Five weeks now becoming four weeks and Rafa Benitez giving very short but illuminating answers.

Basically nobody from the club having got back to him so far….

Rafa Benitez asked about his contract position:

“It is exactly the same situation as before and we are waiting.”

Asked if that meant he’d had no response from Mike Ashley and his people after he (Rafa) had told them what he wanted to agree an extension it was a one word answer….“Yes.”

The manager then refusing to say any more about his future and insisting the conversation was about the team and remaining games:

We have to do our job on Friday and win the game if we can. It’s one game at a time.

“(Leicester) are a very good team.

“They are playing with more confidence now and it will be tough for us, for sure.

“We must approach every game with confidence, calm, and the belief that we can do it.

“Now we have five games and we have to think of every one like a final, as we have said many times.

“We have Lejeune injured, Longstaff too, and the rest of the players are available.”

Rafa Benitez speaking to BBC Newcastle:

(On Lejeune) “It’s a bad injury for anyone but especially for someone who’s been working so hard to be fit.

“To have again the same injury, in the other knee, is really bad luck.

“We have Longstaff and Lejeune injured but the rest of the players are fine and available.

“Diame had a problem with his hip but is fine now. He was training and it’s OK.

“My message is the same….try to concentrate on the games, and hopefully, we can get the points that we need to stay up, as soon as possible.”
