Paul Merson feeling sorry for Newcastle United fans

Paul Merson thinks Newcastle United should be safe.

The Sky Sports pundit pointing to Cardiff losing their last two games and now seven points adrift of the Magpies with a far inferior goal difference as well, with only six games left to play.

Newcastle will go ahead Crystal Palace if winning on Saturday but Merson thinking the South London club will be alright as well.

Paul Merson wonders how Palace can go and win at Manchester City yet be fighting relegation, saying ‘they should not be where they are.’

The simple fact is that players/teams aren’t machines and actually that Palace win was one of three Man City Premier League defeats in December in the space of four games.  The other two clubs to beat them were Leicester and Chelsea, neither doing great this season but on a one-off getting lucky and playing well.

The same with Newcastle, the only team to beat Man City in any competition in 2019, indeed Manchester City have won all of their other 21 matches since December.

It shouldn’t really be a surprise that they lost one of the 22, it should be amazement they won the other 21. Especially when playing  pretty much every midweek as well.

Palace have flair players such as Zaha and Townsend but they are very up and down, turning it on sometimes but not consistently. Palace beat Man City 3-2 with Townend scoring a scorcher and Milivojevic scoring a penalty (one of 10 he has taken in PL this season!) to win it.

Newcastle now have more of an attacking threat of their own with Almiron’s arrival, NUFC having won the last five at home scoring 12 goals.

Paul Merson states: ‘Newcastle had a load of fans come down to Arsenal on Monday and you were thinking ‘why don’t you have a go?’

He thinks it was poor that they didn’t, maybe he is right up to a point but this is Arsenal who have a record now of won fourteen, drawn two (Wolves and Liverpool) and lost only to Man City in the Premier League on the opening day at home.

A bigger question for Merson to ask, rather than Palace and Newcastle’s shortcomings, is how Arsenal can have such a home record an dyet have only won away at Bournemouth, Newcastle and the three in the relegation zone.

Newcastle fans know the limitations of our players/team and know that pretty much everything needs to be clicking if they are going to give anybody decent a good game.

Paul Merson tips Newcastle to win 2-1 thanks to home advantage and with five in a row so far at St James Park, it is more than achievable/likely, than expecting something at Arsenal from a team that hasn’t won away for four months.

Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:

“Newcastle had a load of fans come down to Arsenal on Monday and you were thinking ‘why don’t you have a go?’.

“I thought it was poor.

“They are better than that and have the ammunition to hurt teams.

“But I am disappointed with Palace.

“Out of all the teams at the bottom they are the disappointment because they should not be where they are.

“How do you go to Manchester City and win 3-2, when nobody beats City at home, and then be where you are in the league and go to Tottenham and get rinsed in midweek?

“It wasn’t even really a game.

“I think Newcastle win with home advantage, but both these teams should be safe because Cardiff won’t get enough points.

“Prediction is Newcastle 2 Crystal Palace 1.”
