Newcastle United set for windfall as former player agrees move to Bundesliga

Former Newcastle defender Kevin Mbabu turned 24 on Friday.

The Swiss international was one of the main casualties as Rafa Benitez decided to go almost entirely with experience/older players to get Newcastle United back into the Premier League in summer 2016.

Newcastle fans had liked what they saw as Kevin Mbabu had impressed in the small number of first team opportunities, including when playing against Chelsea and Man City.

However, he was then loaned to Young Boys for a season and then moved permanently there in summer 2017 for a small fee.

News now though from Germany that after helping Young Boys win consecutive league titles and smash Basel’s domination (Young Boys currently a massive 22 points ahead of Basel, Mbabu’s team have won 25 and only lost one of their 29 league games so far this season), the former NUFC defender is now set to move on.

Kevin Mbabu had said a number of times he would like to play again in England but instead it is Wolfsburg where he is set to play for next season.

The German club’s Director of Football, Jorg Schmadtke, has said that Wolfsburg have reached agreement with the player, Mbabu set to be transferred for around £7m.

It has also been reported that Newcastle have a sell-on clause, which would be expected in such a deal when they let him go back to Switzerland.

The sell-on clause believed to be 15% which would mean Newcastle banking a windfall of around £1m if/when the £7m transfer to Wolfsburg goes through.

When he left Newcastle United two years ago, Kevin Mbabu put out an emotional personal message to NUFC fans (see below).

The Mag – 16 June 2017:

Kevin Mbabu has released a touching emotional personal statement to Newcastle fans.

The Swiss defender has made a permanent move to BSC Young Boys after agreeing a three year deal earlier this week.

However, the 22 year old says he felt compelled to put out this public statement to Newcastle supporters via his Twitter account.

Kevin Mbabu personal statement to Newcastle fans:

“As you’ve probably heard…I have left Newcastle, I wanted to thank everybody in the club for helping me when I was a young player.

“I’ll never forget my professional debut with the team. It was a special moment for me.

“I can still feel the atmosphere when I first played at St James Park. You fans were and still are just amazing.

“I’ve been proud to wear the black and white shirt and I gave everything I had each time I got to play for this club.

“I would have loved to give you more  but injuries and new opinions have decided differently.

“I learned a lot in my time in England but the biggest is yet to come for me.

“I work hard everyday to improve myself to become a great footballer.

“Now, a new challenge is coming for me with BSC Young Boys in Switzerland.

“I will give everything to perform in League, Cup, an European games and continue my progression.

“I wish Newcastle all the best for the new coming season back in the Premier League!

“I would like to say a warm thank you to all the Geordie fans for your wishes and support.

“I will remember all the heartfelt messages you sent me.“Now, I turn a page.

“But, I will never forget you, the best fans in England.

“Howay The Lads.”
