Newcastle 0 Crystal Palace 1 – Saturday 6 April 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle going two down to an 81st minute goal.

Rafa’s team the better overall but not having the quality to create more chances from good positions and then not enough quality to finish the chances that were created.

David Punton:

“One of those days then. Frustrating.

“With the finish line of a long hard season in sight we get done by Palace’s first effort on target and from the penalty spot too.

“You get days like these in the Premier League when you’ve an underfunded squad.

“Fail to score and then that likelihood of getting punished up the other end.

“Yedlin conceding the penalty after Lejeune went off with what looked like a bad knee injury. His season could be over.

“That 16 day international break seems to have worked against NUFC. It feels like a bit of momentum was lost.

“Many will come away from that game asking ‘how the hell have we lost that one’.

“The battle for the final haul of points to secure Prem status goes on. Almost safe, but not quite.”

Paul Patterson:

“Enough chances to win four games.

“Shocking refereeing and conning opposition.

“As soon as this season is over the better…”

Jamie Smith:

“Bit of a downer that mind.

“I think everyone had taken safety for granted and one lapse of defensive concentration later we’re looking over our shoulders and checking Cardiff’s fixture run in.

“Didn’t deserve to lose on balance but wasted possession and no killer ball was costly.

“Still think we’re fine but pressure on the Southampton game.

“Also, 11 penalties for them this season??!!

“If we went back 11 penalties, Shearer would still be taking them!”

Nat Seaton:

“A penalty was the only difference between two teams playing what had the feel of an end of season game.

“What few chances we did create weren’t taken but most of the time the ball didn’t even get to the front players as the crossing was so poor (worse than usual which is saying something).

“Another 2018/19 home defeat, this time against a pretty average team, very disappointing.”

Brian Standen:

“Disappointing, soft penalty.

“Very disjointed, not a lot between 2 poor teams today.

“Maybe a red card for them missed first half by ref.

“Still need a couple of points, roll on Friday.”

Toon Bano:

“Completely predictable result.”
