It was back in 1996 when Kevin Keegan’s team humiliated Manchester United.

That 5-0 victory etched on the minds of every Newcastle fans and a fair few Manchester United ones.

Monday night and the Mancs were once again the visitors, though in this case they were the underdogs for once.

Newcastle United’s Under 23s had won six of their last seven league games.

The young Newcastle stars already having qualified for the promotion play-offs, and went into last night’s match with still an outside chance of finishing top, and automatically going up into the reserve league top tier.

By contrast, Man Utd were already ruled out of even the play-offs.

In front of just over a thousand fans at St James Park, the game was effectively settled in the opening three minutes.

In the opening seconds Newcastle’s winger Longelo was through on goal but lost out in a one on one on former NUFC keeper Paul Woolston.

Then with only three minutes on the clock, Nishan Burkart put Man Utd ahead at the other end.

Midway through the first half Burkart doubled the visitors’ lead with his second goal.

Things going from bad to worse when just after the half hour mark, Tahith Chong made it three.

Manchester United were cruising and it was only a case of how many goals if they were up for it, second half subs making no difference to the flow of the game for Newcastle.

Mason Greenwood made it 4-0 on 76 minutes with a brilliant long-range free-kick (watch below).

The final few minutes seeing a Newcastle own goal that summed up United’s night.

I suppose in younger age groups you are more likely to see the odd match where there is such a collapse that goes against form. Plus, a clb suc as Manchester United are almost always going to have talented individuals capable of turning it on.

The good news is that the Newcastle United Under 23s are still in the promotion play-offs and hopefully this will prove a big wake-up call ahead of them.
