Leicester 0 Newcastle 1  – Friday 12 April 8pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle with a vital win that should just about ensure Premier League safety.

Ayoze Perez scoring the winner after Salomon Rondon had slammed a long-range free-kick against the woodwork.

Jamie Smith:

“There it is.

“Relief as 38 points and surely safety secured.

“Great win, tactical master show and some strong performances.

“Almiron again dangerous, I feel he’s a rough diamond that could be incredible with a bit of polishing, but I do sense a bit of frustration seeping in at seeming lack of end product.

“It won’t take long until thoughts turn to Rafa’s future and the long-term effect.

“Safety was a bottom line to this and at least this has been (as good as) sorted and we don’t have to watch Cardiff’s result tomorrow with squeaky backsides.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Everyone enjoy tonight.

“Forget how this should not be seen as a good achievement for us, thank Rafa he has earned us this survival that we had no right to get.

“The lads were all brilliant tonight, completely solid and deserved the win.

“Perez deserves to play for a club competing for cups, I just hope it is us.

“They deserve a great reception at SJP next weekend. Time for a beer!”

Brian Standen:

“Top result. Great performance.

“To be fair we could have won by more!

“Some stand out players – Manquillo great, solid game!

“Schar- what a bargain.

“Typical Rafa, keep them at distance and take a goal!

“Great finish as well by Perez.

“FFS sort Rafa’s contract out NOW.”

David Punton:

“The moment has finally arrived.

“We’re all but safe.

“A fantastic header from Ayoze Perez has been enough to separate the sides.

“Maybe should have been 0-2 but for the crossbar from Rondon, while Vardy misses a big chance.

“After the nightmare at Palace last week this felt a bit like some karma.

“All attention now turns to Rafa, Mike Ashley, the club, and getting that contract sorted.”

Jonathan Drape-Comyn:

“I guess you could call that a quintessential Rafa Benitez win.

“All of the credit goes to the fans tonight who were absolutely incredible from start to finish.

“Also, in a country that loves a proper headed goal – you will do well to find me a better header than that!!”

Nat Seaton:

“What a great away performance!

“38 points surely sees us safe now with 4 games left.

“Hopefully we can pick up a few more before the end of the season…”

Paul Patterson:

“And that ladies and gentleman will be us safe.

“Cardiff need eleven points to gazump us with only six games left.

Well done Rafa and the lads.”

Toon Bano:

“Get in!! That’s us safe.

“It will be another terrifying summer when Rafa leaves.

“All we can hope for is someone high class comes in that no one saw coming that has no issue working under the club’s policy.

Good luck with that Charnley….
