‘Insider’ says Mike Ashley selling Newcastle for £400m – Secret Footballer last said £800m to China
Headlines on Tuesday as ‘Insider’ Dave Kitson has claimed that Newcastle United will be sold before the end of the season, that a sale of NUFC ‘is being done as we speak.’
The former player was appearing as part of Talksport’s international commentary set-up for the Arsenal v Newcastle match eight days ago.
However, due to it not being broadcast in the UK, details of what Kitson said have only now become known over here.
Dave Kitson was a journeyman striker who played for the likes of Reading, Cambridge, Oxford and Portsmouth.
However, it is off the pitch where he has made the most headlines as somebody with supposedly ‘insider’ knowledge, officially and unofficially…
Dave Kitson speaking on Talksport – 1 April 2019:
“I can let you in on a little bit of an exclusive.
“Don’t ask me how I know, but I do, this club (Newcastle United) will be sold before the end of the season.
“It’s going to be between £300m and £400m…but it is going.
“It (Newcastle United) has gone, it is being done as we speak.”
However, Dave Kitson has also been widely reported to be the ‘Secret Footballer’…
If you didn’t know already, the Secret Footballer found fame as a columnist with The Guardian, a mystery player who was allowed to keep his identity secret, due to the claim that this would allow him to reveal more exclusives/secrets.
Since retiring as a player, the Secret Footballer has continued to have his anonymous views published, meanwhile Dave Kitson retired from professional football in 2014.
The Secret Footballer certainly puts out a lot of ‘exclusives’ but anonymous or not, they regularly turn out to have little/no substance.
I wouldn’t get too carried away with the latest claims from Dave Kitson, seen as the ‘Secret Footballer’ claimed a Chinese consortium were buying Newcastle United for around £800m three years ago. Twice what Kitson is claiming now as the sale price. Although having said that, other companies Mike Ashley is involved with have recently developed a nasty habit of dropping severly in value.
Even if Kitson’s new exclusive has any substance, it is only eight months ago when the Secret Footballer was telling us how unreliable Mike Ashley is, that he (Ashley) keeps messing people about by telling them one minute he will sell Newcastle United, only to then refuse to.
As Newcastle fans I think we are all well aware of that last one!
A Chinese consortium are in advanced talks to take over Newcastle United. I heard £810m but seems a lot! #NUFC

The man brokering the takeover tells me that the problem is with Ashley. One minute he wants to sell, the next minute he’s changed his mind and that’s been going on for two years. https://t.co/v2uo70QopV
