Graeme Souness fears Newcastle United
Graeme Souness is afraid of Newcastle United when it comes to his hopes of seeing Liverpool winning the Premier League.
An intriguing final few weeks seeing the scousers and Manchester City fighting it out.
Man City may have the advantage of an arguably better squad but certainly Liverpool hold the advantage when it comes to strength in depth in the pundits/experts department.
As well as Graeme Souness, all of these former Liverpool players are working across Sky Sports, BT Sport and the BBC, to greater or lesser extents…
Jamie Carragher, Paul Ince, Michael Owen, Phil Thompson, Dean Saunders, Charlie Adam, Stephen Warnock, Mark Lawrenson, Danny Murpy, Jamie Redknapp, Steve McManaman, Craig Bellamy and David James. It is quite overwhelming really.
As it stands the top of the table is:
85 Liverpool (played 34) GD +57
83 Man City (played 33) GD +64
Bottom line is if Man City win all their games, they win the Premier League.
This is who they have left to play:
Liverpool: Cardiff (A), Huddersfield (H), Newcastle United (A), Wolves (H)
Man City: Spurs (H), Man Utd (A), Burnley (A), Leicester (H), Brighton (A)
Graeme Souness has been talking to Sky Sports about the run-in:
“I think that looking at them, the dangerous game for Man City is the (Man) United game.
“Derby games are notoriously hard to predict,
“The dangerous game to me for Liverpool, is Newcastle away.
“I think the next game (for Liverpool) takes care of itself, Cardiff. Although they will want to go to war, Cardiff, will be fighting for their lives and I think Liverpool will deal with that, then the three guys up front have got a goal or two.
“I think Huddersfield (for Liverpool) takes care of itself as well, they (Huddersfield) re already thinking about next season.
“For me, that Newcastle one is the worry.
‘The way Rafa sets his team up, you can see that he is quite happy to sit back, to absorb the pressure and try and catch them on the break.
‘Tactically he is very, very good and the support up there will be right up for this game
“They (Newcastle fans) will want to put a spoke in it.
“Then ideally you’d have been wanting Wolves to get to the cup final so that their minds would have been somewhere else.
“But for me it is Liverpool at Newcastle and (Man) City at Old Trafford.
“They are the games that will decide this league.”
Graeme Souness is quite right that Newcastle fans will ‘want to put a spoke in’ Liverpool’s chances of winning the league, although it would be exactly the same if it was Man City at St James Park.
For fans of any age, Newcastle supporters having a preference for Liverpool winning the title would be pretty strange anyway. Considering just how wild the celebrations were at Anfield as the scousers helped hand the title to Man Utd in 1996.
