Garth Crooks picks Newcastle star in PL team of the week “Life is nothing if it’s not about timing”
Garth Crooks has picked his best 11 performers from the weekend’s action.
The Premier League team of the weekend that has most impressed him
Included in his top 11 is one player from Newcastle’s 3-1 victory over Southampton.
No prizes for guessing that it is Ayoze Perez.
Garth Crooks saying about his hat-trick: ‘…in front of a packed St James Park and with Alan Shearer watching in the Match of the Day studio. I don’t think it gets better than that for Ayoze Perez.’
The Spaniard might like to differ on that one, with new quotes this morning from the player saying he will listen to offers in the summer, though it isn’t ‘100%’ for certain he will definitely leave.
As Garth Crooks correctly points out about the up and down Ayoze Perez record at Newcastle United: ‘The Spaniard has found hitting the back of the net on a regular basis a bit of a challenge in the past…’
These last two seasons summing that up, in 2017/18 the striker scored only 2 goals in the first 24 PL games, then 6 in the final 14. Whilst this season it was only 3 goals in the opening 25 matches, before 7 in the last 10 games.
Garth Crooks also points out that the Perez hat-trick is the first for NUFC in the top tier since Gini Wijnaldum in 2015. Coincidentally, Wijnaldum also makes this PL team of the week as his stunning striker against Cardiff yesterday set Liverpool on the way to a 2-0 win, a result which means Newcastle are now mathematically safe, as Neil Warnock’s team can’t catch them.
Garth Crooks with his BBC Sport Premier League team of the week and reasons for selecting Ayoze Perez:
“What a way to get your ninth, 10th and 11th league goals of the season.
“Playing against Southampton in front of a packed St James Park and with Alan Shearer watching in the Match of the Day studio.
“I don’t think it gets better than that for Ayoze Perez.
“The Spaniard has found hitting the back of the net on a regular basis a bit of a challenge in the past but saved his best for Shearer to observe.
“Life is nothing if it’s not about timing.
“Did you know?
“Perez’s hat-trick was Newcastle’s first in the Premier League since October 2015, when Georginio Wijnaldum scored four times against Norwich City.”
