England cricket star bizarrely points to Tino Asprilla as reason not to pick Jofra Archer
Tino Asprilla still makes regular headlines.
It is now over 20 years since the Colombian left Newcastle United but he is still remembered with much affection by Newcastle fans.
For his skills and spectacular goals, as well as his larger than life off the pitch persona.
However, over 23 years since signing for Newcastle, rather bizarrely, Tino Asprilla has been quoted as a reason for the England cricket team not picking Jofra Archer.
The much talked about fast bowler was born and grew up in Barbados but has now become eligible to play for England, due to residency criteria.
England are due to name their provisional squad on Wednesday for this year’s cricket world cup and it is Geordie fast bowler Mark Wood who has made the Tino Asprilla comparison with Jofra Archer.
Mark Wood is from Ashington but according to Sky Sports is actually an AFC Wimbledon fan, whilst playing his cricket for Durham.
Wood says that disrupting the England team with Archer’s inclusion, could have the same impact as when Tino Asprilla was brought in by Kevin Keegan in February 1996.
Mark Wood speaking to Sky Sports:
“I was speaking about this with the lads at Durham and it was the old Kevin Keegan thing.
“Bringing in Tino Asprilla because you want to keep the team at the top.
“You still want to keep moving forward but does that change the dynamic?
“Does it mix it up? All of a sudden, you can lose the momentum and drop down.
“There is no doubt that Jofra is a world-class player. He plays in the hardest tournaments, the IPL and the Big Bash, and excels.
“He would obviously be a great asset but would that affect the dynamic of the team? Would I want to see someone like Liam Plunkett, who has been our best bowler for three years, left out? No.
“Would I want to see myself left out? Obviously not. Would I want to see David Willey, who I am close friends with and who gives you a left-arm option, left out? No.
“Would I want to see Chris Woakes, who I am really good friends with and has taken loads of wickets, left out? No. Or Tom Curran, who has bowled well?
“It is hard to see. Does anyone deserve to be left out? I don’t know.”
This is proof surely, that if a lie is repeated often enough then it becomes fact for so many people.
Bear in mind Mark Wood had just turned six years old shortly before Tino Asprilla arrived at Newcastle United.
He hasn’t got a clue about it apart from what he has and been told by others.
There were all kinds of reasons as to why Newcastle didn’t quite win the Premier League in 1995/96 but Tino Asprilla most definitely wasn’t one of them!
Instead, he was somebody who was a real asset from the very first time he stepped onto the pitch as a sub at Middlesbrough and was the inspiration behind turning a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory.
To sum it up, I think I know as much about Jofra Archer as Mark Wood knows about why Newcastle United didn’t win the Premier League 23 years ago!
