Brighton 1 Newcastle 1 – Instant United fan/writer reaction to Saturday night’s draw

Brighton 1 Newcastle 1  – Saturday 27 April 5.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle coasting in the first half and one goal up but an abysmal second half, as Brighton at least started trying.

Ben Cooper:

“Played well in the first half, quality team goal.

“Poor in the second half, especially the likes of Kenedy and Muto who maybe needed to show a bit of guts.

“To be fair it was end of season stuff for us and it was all about Brighton.

“They were atrocious. Which is nice.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Feel a little flat considering how we bossed the first half and how woeful they were.

“I did say at half time there was no way they would be as bad in the second half and so it proved.

2Another accomplished display from us away from home.

“We were probably more threatening going forward than we were at Leicester.

“Perez injury feels like one too many for this squad and I wouldn’t expect much from the final two games.

“But lets not forget how good our points total is for a team that hadn’t won a game before November.

“Now get Rafa signed up!”

Jonathan Drape-Comyn:

“A game of few surprises!

“Mike Dean was rubbish, Newcastle sat back too deep after going 1-0 up with a sold out away end.

“The game should have been dead at half-time.

“Great goal from Perez and although we could talk about the game… there is certainly bigger fish to fry for Newcastle United over the next week.

“Newcastle are safe, there is fu.. all to play for.

“So if Rafa’s contract isn’t sorted out by the time we play Liverpool next week then there is a lot to be worried about.”

Paul Patterson:

“My usual mantra.

“Never knock an away point.”

Brian Standen:

“Easiest away game ever but we only drew.

“We ran the show until minute 75 so a little disappointing.

“However, we are safe, end of!

“Clock ticks until June 30th then – who knows!

“This club deserves success, or should I say, we do.”

Jamie Smith:

“Bit of a damp squib after a dominant first half, with the equaliser clearly coming.

“There are some clear problems in our squad.

“Muto and Kenedy have been abject failures, Shelvey just doesn’t seem to fit any more and realistically a spike in form from Perez has been the difference between getting sucked into the relegation battle or not.

“That battle is now confirmed as over surely.

“Cardiff’s failure to get anything against relegated Fulham means they deserve the drop.

“Pleased for Chris Hughton but if he goes I would welcome a Brighton relegation next year.”

Nat Seaton:

“Great early goal but not much to shout about after that against a poor Brighton team.

“Can’t complain about not winning when you only have 1 attempt on target and you come away with a 1-1 draw, it was just a pity we didn’t make more of the first half possession.

“Here’s hoping for better service to Rondon next Saturday!”

Toon Bano:

“Should have won that game but the lack of quality once Ayoze went off was blatant.

“Atsu is not good enough.

“Kenedy won’t be back.

“Muto isn’t gonna pull up any trees.

“If Rafa leaves then the squad will need major investment as his miracle working skills will be gone.

“So…..why not do it with Rafa???

“That would be logical.”
