Andy Gray imposes own character deficiencies – Says Rafa Benitez wants Liverpool to fail
Andy Gray has never been slow to back Mike Ashley and go against Rafa Benitez and the Newcastle fans.
He and his fellow disgraced presenter Richard Keys often reminding us why their time was up working in the UK.
In late October, before Newcastle had won a game, Andy Gray said (see below) that you had to forget about what transfer funds had or hadn’t been made available, claiming that it was all down to Rafa Benitez because he picks the team.
In his latest ramblings, Andy Gray has been discussing the title race.
Talking about the challenges facing Liverpool and Man City, two games each left to play and City a point and four goals better goal difference at the minute.
Summing up how the likes of himself and Richard Keys think, Andy Gray claims that Rafa Benitez will be desperate to help stop Liverpool winning the title, because he didn’t do it when he was at Anfield.
The beIN Sports presenter clearly thinking everybody is as bitter as him.
Rafa will be doing everything he can to win on Saturday BUT only because he is a true professional and his first duty is to himself and the Newcastle fans.
I have zero doubt that he wants Liverpool to end up as champions. why would he resent them doing so? The owners who he fell out with are long gone and he still has a great rapport with the Liverpool fans, his family home still in the north west.
If Newcastle aren’t going to win any particular trophy…then I can guarantee Rafa will want the scousers to do it.
I could understand it if Andy Gray was talking about Chelsea, a club where the fans were a total embarrassment, not giving Benitez any credit for rescuing them mid-season, winning the Europa League and guiding them to Champions League qualification.
If you go along with Andy Gray’s thinking, if Rafa leaves Newcastle and then Mike Ashley walked away, we would then be expected to believe that Benitez would begrudge Newcastle fans seeing their team win a trophy????
Andy Gray talking on beIN Sports about the title run-in:
“Leicester at home, I think they (Man City) will feel confident about beating them and Brighton (on the final day of the season).
“They might have to play really well to beat Brighton because they might need something in the last game but I wouldn’t swap those two for what Liverpool have got.
“They have got to go to Newcastle who are going alright and who have Rafa Benitez in charge, I don’t think he will want Liverpool to win the title because he didn’t.
“So he (Rafa Benitez) will want to win that game.
“Wolves (who Liverpool have on the final day) you just don’t know, they are a side playing without any fear and who want to finish in style, they could easily go to Anfield and upset them.
“So I wouldn’t swap City’s two games for theirs.”
The Mag – 24 October 2018:
Andy Gray talking on beIN Sports:
“You can blame Mike Ashley all you want, for a lack of funds.
“(But) In the last two or three seasons, 15 or 16 players have arrived.
“Mike Ashley does not pick the team.
“When August comes around, only one man picks the team, and that is Rafa Benitez.
“People will say that they have played four of the top six…but Wolves got a point against Man City.
“The next seven games Newcastle fans will be thinking they can win them.
“But other teams will be looking at Newcastle and thinking we can win that.
“He (Rafa Benitez) shouldn not have said ‘We have to hope there are three worse teams in the league’, that was wrong.
“You can’t say this to fans.
“He has the responsibility and he is not producing the goods.
“He has to turn it round and very quickly.”
