An objective view from Canada on Mike Ashley, Rafa Benitez and Newcastle United
An objective view from Canada…?
Rafa Benitez is gone (and has been for a while), unless there is a new owner.
He is too honourable to say so during the season and whatever Ashley – Newcastle’s own Donald Trump – promises, no one trusts him.
Rafa Benitez wants the opportunity to win trophies, which requires spending.
There will yet again be limited transfer funds at Newcastle United, whatever is promised.
Mike Ashley is a businessman – it’s all about profit and loss.
Why would he invest £100 million, even £40 million, to move the club up even to 8th in the table?
With just a marginal increase in placings payment and TV revenues, no significant impact on merchandising or sponsorship income.
And he’s certainly not willing to fund a move to challenge the top six.
I’m hoping that the decision to hold back the funds for a new training ground is to allow a prospective purchaser of the club to make their own plans.
Keep your fingers crossed, there could well be discreet behind-the-scenes negotiations with a potential buyer.
That is our only hope.
Without Rafa Benitez, relegation beckons.
