Surely Newcastle United fans and Sunderland supporters can agree on this ahead of Wembley
A lot of ‘banter’ between Newcastle United fans and Sunderland supporters ahead of today’s match.
It is Portsmouth v Sunderland in the final of the Checkatrade Trophy.
The clubs third and fourth in League One, taking a break from the promotion battle.
I know that this might be a bit controversial but when I see the banter/arguing between the two sets of fans, that’s Newcastle and Sunderland by the way and not Portsmouth and Sunderland, could they just possibly be both right?
Newcastle United fans are laughing at the fact that their rivals are competing in a competition limited to League One and Two clubs, as well as Under 21 teams from Premier League and Championship clubs.
Meanwhile Sunderland supporters are claiming their local rivals are jealous of their trip to the capital.
This is the most high profile Checkatrade/EFL trophy final that there has been.
That is due to the circumstances involved, two clubs that were in the Premier League not so long ago and the crowd set to be the biggest ever in the competition.
Where I think Sunderland supporters are correct, is in the fact that what is there not to like about a day out/weekend in London on the drink, plus a trip to Wembley?
A chance to take your kids as well, with far more tickets available than you get for the FA Cup or League Cup finals.
Newcastle United fans are on the money as well though, when saying that this is an embarrassment for Sunderland and their fans, in the final of a lower league cup where their run to Wembley included beating three teams of kids from Stoke City, Man City and rivals Newcastle United.
Leaving rivalry aside for a moment…
I would totally understand that if they beat Portsmouth, Sunderland fans in the coming week are saying they had a brilliant time in London and nice to see their team win a game at Wembley. I have no problem respecting those people.
However, the ones who would/will be claiming afterwards that this is a proper trophy to be added to what they have won in the past, then they deserve all the flak that would come their way.
