Sunderland owners are at it again ‘SAFC are much bigger than NUFC…”
The Sunderland owners are at it again.
Ten months ago (see below) you had minority shareholder and director Charlie Methven declaring: ‘I’ve always found Newcastle to be a rather arrogant club. They seem to think that they’re special.’
Methven desperately saying anything populist to try and get the Sunderland supporters onboard.
Now it is majority shareholder Stewart Donald who is trying to ride the wave of goodwill generated by a Wembley appearance, despite the promotion push faltering with only six wins in their last 15 games.
Donald announcing on Twitter: ‘SAFC are much bigger than NUFC down south so nobody down here talks or knows much about them sorry.’
Maybe he ran out of characters on his Tweet and shortened Southwick to South..
Obviously nothing for Newcastle fans to get irate about, it is simply funny.
All very small town/club to have an owner doing this, especially when you currently ‘make up numbers’ in League One rather than the Premier League, or even the Championship which Sunderland finished bottom of last season.
A club owner regularly interacting with fans on Twitter rarely ends well, certainly not at a club of substance which Sunderland fans clearly think their club to be.
The clowns at QPR (Tony Fernandes) and Aston Villa (Tony Xia) finding out that trying to be populist on social media was meaningless if you were hoepless at running the actual football club.
Interesting to see how popular Stewart Donald will be if Sunderland are once again making up the numbers in League One next season…
Stewart Donald replying to a Newcastle fan on Twitter with:
“Our club is wonderful.
“Not winning a cup or walking a league makes us sound like our rivals up the road which I suppose is failure but Lets see what happens.
“I don’t know much about NUFC to be honest.
“Only domestic cup I think they have won in my lifetime was the some Texaco Cup thing?
“I only know they make up numbers in the P/League.
“SAFC are much bigger than NUFC down south so nobody down here talks or knows much about them sorry.”
The Mag – 26 May 2019:
In an interview with a Sunderland fanzine, Charlie Methven has said he has ‘always been fond of Sunderland’ and ‘always had an antipathy towards Newcastle.’
Methven claims that he and Stewart Donald will be supporting the team home and away but ‘not in a Mike Ashley way.’The new co-owner also declares ‘I’ve always found Newcastle to be a rather arrogant club. They seem to think that they’re special.’
