Rolando Aarons impresses in Sheffield derby
Ahead of the game, Rolando Aarons said he was a big fan of derbies and rued the fact he had never played for Newcastle United in one.
Monday night saw the Newcastle loan player help Sheffield Wednesday to a respectable draw against rivals United.
In a game of very limited clear chances (one each on target for the two sides), Aarons looked one of the few players capable of creating/finding a goal.
A crowd of 31,630 watched on as it became the third Sheffield derby in a row to end up goalless.
Arguably a result that wasn’t great for either club.
With a win the visitors would have gone back into the automatic promotion places ahead of Leeds on goal difference.
Whilst Sheffield Wednesday would have closed to within four points of the play-offs with a victory. They remain unbeaten since Steve Bruce arrived and Newcastle loan signings Achraf Lazaar & Rolando Aarons came in, however, the number of draws is hampering their outside promotion chances.
Lazaar missed out with a hamstring injury last night and next up Sheff Wed have a massive game as a win at Derby would take them level on points with the Rams, who are currently seventh.
From Sheffield Star match report:
‘It did not take Boyd long to make an impact. The midfielder raced on to a smart through ball by Rolando Aarons and floated in a teasing cross near the byline only for Fletcher’s spectacular overhead kick attempt to go high over the top.’
‘The hosts created the best chance of the contest in the 65th minute. Aarons broke down the left and his low delivery picked out Sam Hutchinson from eight yards out but the defensive midfielder, on the stretch, fired straight at Henderson. It was a big opportunity spurned by Bruce’s side.
‘Aarons, a lively figure in the second half, drilled a shot over late on as it finished all square.’
This was Aarons’ sixth Championship appearance as well as scoring in a 2-0 reserve derby win over Sheff Utd, the winger already having shown more than he did in two previous loan spells in Italy and the Czech Republic.
