Paul Merson says Rafa Benitez will leave Newcastle United, if he wants to be successful

Paul Merson has been talking about Newcastle United and specifically Rafa Benitez.

In the Sky Sports studio plenty to discuss about the manager’s achievements and what the future holds.

With Paul Merson it was mostly positive but the odd snide comment thrown in.

Merson bizarrely thinks the Newcastle job might suit Rafa because it is a ‘nice, relaxing job’, that’s a new one on me!

However, the Sky Sports pundit says that if the Spaniard wants to win trophies he has to leave Tyneside: ‘I think as well that the Newcastle job suits him…a nice, relaxing job. If he wants to win something…let’s be honest, he’s not going to stay at Newcastle.’

Only 43 days until Rafa Benitez takes charge of the final game of his existing contract, we live in hope.

Jeff Stelling:

“Isaac Hayden has said that Rafa Benitez is one of the great managers in the Premier League, would you agree?”

Paul Merson:

“Yes I would.

“If he wasn’t manager of Newcastle they would be easily bottom three.

“What he is getting out of those players week in week out, it is amazing. They all know what they’re doing and what they need to do.

“Newcastle filled the whole away end at Bournemouth and even Monday night at Arsenal…if they score and somebody runs over, there won’t be a spare seat.

“I think Rafa is up there with the best, to get what he does out of those players is amazing.

“Could Pep Guardiola do what Rafa Benitez is doing with these players at Newcastle? No chance.

“I think as well that the Newcastle job suits him…a nice, relaxing job.

“If he wants to win something…let’s be honest, he’s not going to stay at Newcastle.

“You have always got that dream of winning something with Newcastle, who haven’t won anything for so long, but he will get to a Cup competition and rest everyone won’t he?”

Jeff Stelling:

‘The buy out clause for Salomon Rondon is £16.5m…”

Paul Merson:

“I would have bought him already.

“He’s a major player and he’s their best player.

“He is a handful and £16.5m, in football terms, it is a cup of tea.

“If I was a team coming up from the Championship I would look to buy him straight away.
