Paul Merson covered Bournemouth 2 Newcastle 2 for Sky Sports – Had plenty to say afterwards

Paul Merson was the Sky Sports pundit nominated to watch Bournemouth v Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

The Sky Sports pundit saying it was probably a fair result when the match ended in a draw.

However, he agreed with Rafa Benitez that the penalty that got the home side back in the game was softer than soft.

Nothing soft though about either of Newcastle’s goals.

Salomon Rondon’s superb free-kick just before half-time impressing Paul Merson: ‘Both Rondon and Ritchie standing over it and you think Ritchie is going to hit this all day long and he (Rondon) hits it with power, pace, over the wall, keeper no chance.’

Whilst the last second one from Ritchie, he was even more impressed by…’That goal of Ritchie’s is worthy of getting a result in any football match across the world. It was phenomenal.’

A win would have been massive but a 2-2 draw away from home against a decent team and scoring two class goals. I’ll take that.

Paul Merson speaking on Sky Sports:

“It ebbed and flowed, Newcastle started off really well, then Bournemouth had their stake in the game.

“First half not a lot in it but a great free-kick by Rondon.

“They (Newcastle) definitely had the wind in their favour the first half did Newcastle and were a threat.

“A great free-kick though.

“Both Rondon and Ritchie standing over it and you think Ritchie is going to hit this all day long and he (Rondon) hits it with power, pace, over the wall, keeper no chance.

“Come out second half, Bournemouth started really well, had the wind.

“They got the penalty, it is a home penalty. A bit of a weak one.

“The lad {Fernandez) puts his hand on his shoulder.

“Solanke comes on, a good run, strong, lays it back to King who whips a right foot shot into the corner, good finish.

“You think that is game over.

“Then right at the death the ball comes in, a real deep cross from the right.

“It comes to Ritchie just inside the box and he volleys it. Unbelievable technique, especially in this weather. Half volleys it straight into the roof of the net.

“I would probably say a fair result.

“Newcastle fans had travelled a long way, took all their tickets, they went ballistic.

“That goal of Ritchie’s is worthy of getting a result in any football match across the world.

“It was phenomenal.”
