Overwhelming response when Blackpool fans asked if Elias Sorensen should get more of a chance
Elias Sorensen has seen the hope of regular first team football disappear since joining Blackpool two months ago.
One substitute appearance and no starts has been the sum total of his League One first team experience so far.
Whilst it is now exactly four weeks since the 19 year old striker even made the bench, unused as Blackpool got a 1-1 draw at Sunderland.
Rafa Benitez has expressed his frustration at the lack of football for the young Danish striker who scored 19 times for the Newcastle Under 23s in the first half of the season.
When asked before last weekend’s match about why Elias Sorensen wasn’t getting a chance, Blackpool boss Terry McPhillips said:
“We have got plenty to pick from and we just ask for the lads on the bench and those who aren’t in the squad to stay patient, wait your turn and stick with us.”
That was before Sorensen was yet again not even named in the matchday squad. Blackpool fortunate to get a 2-2 draw at home to lowly Southend, courtesy of a 96th minute goal.
The local (to Blackpool) Lancs Live website has asked Blackpool fans ‘Should Elias Sorensen get more game time’ and outlined his competition for a place in the team/squad.
‘The teenager currently sits as the fourth choice behind preferred options Armand Gnanduillet and Nathan Delfouneso who both started against Southend at the weekend.
Chris Long, who arrived at Bloomfield from Fleetwood Town in January, beat Sorensen to the bench and came on in the second-half.
There is a suggestion that McPhilliips is keen to stick with big and physical strikers as opposed to Sorensen who uses his pace to get in behind defences.
Whatever the reasoning, the Dane could provide Blackpool with an alternative option upfront.’
This is how the alternatives have got on this season so far:
Nathan Delfouneso has scored only 6 goals in 31 League One appearances this season.
Whilst Armand Gnanduillet has scored 8 in 33 League One appearances.
Then Chris Long with 2 in 8 so far after a free transfer from Fleetwood.
A total of 16 goals in 72 League One appearances between the trio who are currently ahead of Elias Sorensen.
Blackpool are currently only three points off the play-off places and it is easy to see where their problems lie.
In defence they have only conceded 36 goals so far this season, with only the top three clubs in the table having conceded less.
However, in total they have only scored 38 League One goals so far, only three teams in the whole division having scored less.
In the Lancs Live poll that has been running on Tuesday, by 5.30pm the verdict has been overwhelming, with 95% of Blackpool fans thinking Elias Sorensen should be given more of a chance.
Blackpool have failed to score in three of their last five League One matches and only won of the last six games.
Maybe time to give the Newcastle loan striker his chance.
