They say a week is a long time in politics, well at Newcastle United you can count it in days, if that.
Asked to rate the players after the 2-0 win over Burnley, Fabian Schar (9.0) was easily man of the match for fans. Solid defending, largely impressive passing and a spectacular goal.
Four days later and he had a shocker, topped off by conceding the opening goal when he totally failed to track Declan Rice on the corner.
Fabian Schar (4.4) getting the very lowest marks for the West Ham game.
Joining him was somebody else who has been excellent recently, step forward Florian Lejeune (4.4). He was left with two men at the back post but then made things so much worse when lunging into a challenge that gifted a penalty and the killer second goal just before half-time.
The last couple of games the Newcastle fans hadn’t rated anybody as having a bad game, this time it is pretty much the reverse.
So much so that the Newcastle player getting the highest mark didn’t even start the game…
Replacing the injured Sean Longstaff at half-time, Mohamed Diame (5.8) did ok, as he looked strong and kept possession, whilst also trying to drive the team forward.
Five of the starting eleven got a mark of 5.0 or better.
Top of those was Martin Dubravka (5.5), who did ok generally and arguably could do little about either goal.
Matt Ritchie (5.4) battled away well even though it was a difficult day for the visitors.
Salomon Rondon (5.2) was well marshalled but still gave the West Ham defenders a battle, whilst Lascelles (5.2) was the pick of the three centre-backs.
Isaac Hayden (5.0) the other one, although he didn’t hit the heights of recent games.
The other four starters all fell below that 5.0 line, with Javier Manquillo (4.8) offering little going forward, whilst Ayoze Perez (4.8) was little help to Rondon or his other teammates.
A tough day for Almiron (4.6) as he maybe found three games in a week a step too far and spent much of his time with aimless running to little effect. Sean Longstaff (4.7) not able to get any control on the game during that first half, unlike his run of matches previous.
Dummett (4.5) and Atsu (4.3) off the bench later on but not really able to improve the situation.
