Newcastle United retain interest in signing Nahitan Nandez – Report
Last summer (2018) Newcastle United were linked with a move for Nahitan Nandez.
The midfielder who plays on the right, having impressed for Boca Juniors after a move from Penarol in his native Uruguay.
Moving to Boca Juniors back in August 2017, it is reported by Talksport that the midfielder had a £12m release clause inserted.
Which would help to explain why Newcastle United didn’t buy him, if there was genuine interest, with Yoshinori Muto at £9.5m being the biggest transfer Mike Ashley allowed last summer.
Still only 23, obviously Nahitan Nandez fits in with Mike Ashley’s preferred transfer policy of younger players who could increase in value.
If Newcastle do retain an interest though, they are set to have competition.
A host of Serie A clubs are also credited with interest, with Leeds United also now added to the list if they get promotion.
Nandez has six goals in 29 league starts for Boca Juniors and is still waiting for his first international goal for Uruguay.
He is a regular though for Uruguay so shouldn’t have a problem with a work visa.
He played in the World Cup finals last summer and started both international in the past week when winning 4-0 and 3-0 in friendlies against Thailand and Uzbekistan respectively.
Nahitan Nandez started in the World Cup wins over Egypt, Russia and Portugal, then was part of the team that lost 2-0 to eventual winners France in the quarter-finals.
All eyes of course on what happens with Mike Ashley and Rafa Benitez, which will then have a massive bearing on transfer activity this summer.
