Sean Longstaff is set to miss the rest of the season.

An official Newcastle United statement on Thursday morning confirmed he has a knee ligament injury.

The midfielder having been forced off at half-time on Saturday during the defeat to West Ham.

Newcastle say Sean Longstaff is ‘likely’ to miss the rest of the season but with the nature of the injury and only nine weeks and nine matches remaining, the reality is that he is certain not to be seen again this season.

Even if by some miracle he was back available by early May, there is no way Rafa Benitez would be risking his future health by rushing him back, unlike certain previous NUFC managers.

Elsewhere, The Mail report that they have been told Longstaff will be back running by early June.

Which means he should have a full pre-season and be fine for the start of the 2019/20 campaign.

We wish him well.

Newcastle United official statement:

‘Newcastle United can confirm midfielder Sean Longstaff is likely to miss the remainder of the 2018/19 season with a knee ligament injury.

The 21-year-old – who has been shortlisted for the Premier League’s Player of the Month for February – was replaced at half time during Saturday’s Premier League game at West Ham United.

Academy graduate Longstaff has made 13 appearances in all competitions for the Magpies this term, scoring twice.’
