New report suggests Newcastle United are one of top 10 dirtiest clubs in Europe

Newcastle United feature highly in a new report from the CIES Football Observatory.

They looked at all five major European leagues – Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Serie A, Premier League and La Liga.

Examining in league matches how many times teams suffered and committed fouls in games this season.

Little surprise to see that Barcelona are at one extreme of the stats.

The Spanish club fouled on average 15.7 times each league game, compared to 10.5 fouls per match themselves. That making it a ratio of 1.50 in terms of fouls against them as compared to fouls they had committed.

Newcastle United though are in the other table, of those European clubs who are committing more fouls than they are suffering.

Newcastle are joint tenth worst and it is actually Brighton who are rated the very worst for fouling this season.

Newcastle are fouled on average 9.4  times each game compared to the 11.5 fouls per match they commit.

Other stats seem to back up the idea that Newcastle players are putting their foot in more.

Last season Newcastle players picked up 57 yellow cards (and 2 reds), compared to 65 yellows (and 0 reds) by the opposition clubs.

With seven PL games still remaining, Newcastle currently have 53 yellows (and 2 reds), compared to 50 yellows (and 1 red) by opposition players.

Last season only Hayden (8) and Ritchie (6) got six or more yellow cards, whilst this season Schar already has 10, Ritchie with 9 and Yedlin 6.

CIES Football Observatory:

‘CIES Football Observatory Weekly Post ranks big-5 league teams according to the ratio between fouls suffered and committed during the current season using data from OptaPro.

FC Barcelona players suffered the most fouls with respect to those committed (1.5 times).

(Barcelona on average each game seeing their players fouled 15.7 times, whilst themselves committing only 10.5 fouls on average each match.)

At the opposite end is Brighton & Hove with a ratio of 0.68.’
