Ian Wright hoping Newcastle United survive because “I couldn’t take Shearer’s tears”

Ian Wright has gone from being an irritant to one of the most informed/clued up media people when it comes to talking about Newcastle United.

The former Arsenal striker often speaking out on behalf of Newcastle fans, attacking Mike Ashley’s ownership of Newcastle United and the way he has ran the club into the ground.

This often wrong foots the rest of the media, especially those pro-Ashley and hostile to Newcastle fans, as it is far easier to dismiss something lifelong fan Alan Shearer might say, as opposed to somebody with no connection to NUFC.

Of course there is a connection of sorts, as Ian Wright is big friends with Alan Shearer and has been educated by the Newcastle United legend as to what is the reality of Ashley and the club.

In one of his rants (see below) against Mike Ashley earlier this season, Ian Wright said ‘All he (Ashley) has done at Newcastle…I speak to Al(an Shearer) all the time. I don’t joke and mess around with him about it now because it is too close to the bone what is actually going on with Mike Ashley with his take, take, take.’

However, he has now allowed himself a small joke at Shearer’s expense, claiming he ‘couldn’t take Shearer’s tears’ if Newcastle were relegated.

With Newcastle six points clear and nine games to play though, Ian Wright thinks the Magpies are going to be ok.

As to whether Newcastle United will be ok after this season is yet again down to Mike Ashley and whether he is finally willing to sell the club at a fair/market price, or radically change the way he runs the club.

It would be a brave man who’d bet on either of those things happening any time soon.

Ian Wright speaking to BBC Radio Five Live:

“I think that Newcastle are going to be alright.

“I wouldn’t want to see Newcastle go down, to be honest…

“I couldn’t take Shearer’s tears!”

The Mag – 1 October 2018:

Ian Wright talking  to BBC Radio Five Live:

“What Mike Ashley is doing to Newcastle is similar to what the Romans used to do to the Barbarians. Just come in somewhere and totally took it over.

“Don’t care about what is going on, what’s going on with the infrastructure, the people living there, just took over and do everything he (Mike Ashley) wants.

“All he has done at Newcastle…I speak to Al(an Shearer) all the time.

“I don’t joke and mess around with him about it now because it is too close to the bone what is actually going on with Mike Ashley with his take, take, take.

“You mention Liverpools and like what Manchester City have done, what Abramovich (at Chelsea) has done, they have built the community as well.

“He (Mike Ashley) has done nothing for Newcastle or the area, or anything.

“The monies Newcastle have continually made from being in the Premier League, where is it?

“One of the best managers in the world (Rafa Benitez), a man who is capable of doing a lot….where is that money?

“What has happened to it?

“Why are there no players bought at Newcastle?”Why is there no infrastructure?

“What is he (Ashley) doing for the area of Newcastle?”What is he doing, what is Mike Ashley doing at Newcastle, apart from take, take, take?

“Newcastle fans have been unbelievable with the patience they have got.

“They are desperate for somebody to buy it…Peter Kenyon, you would hope he would come in and change stuff.

“I just feel for Newcastle fans right now because it is not even a joke anymore.

“It is not a joke, it is terrible what has gone on at Newcastle.”
