Hopes raised of at last Newcastle United shifting Henri Saivet in the summer
Henri Saivet isn’t the worst player to wear a Newcastle United shirt but he simply wasn’t good enough for the Premier League.
With Newcastle battling relegation and desperately short of defenders and especially attacking players, spending £5m on the midfielder was simply bizarre, especially as Jonjo Shelvey arrived at the same time and Newcastle were relatively well off for midfielders anyway.
Even more ridiculous was the fact that Mike Ashley went for one of his typical overly long contracts giving Henri Saivet a five and a half year deal (Jack Colback was given a six year one!). I can only assume that for Ashley and his minions this length of contract is in theory preferable in accounting terms.
Anyway, we are now coming up to the three and a half years gone point and ‘only’ two years left for the former Bordeaux player.
Hopes of loans turning into permanent moves didn’t happen with either St Etienne or Sivasspor, so possibly third time lucky with Bursaspor.
In August, Henri Saivet joined the Turkish club for the season, in return for a reported (see below) £800,000 loan fee.
Having only started three league matches for Newcastle since joining in January 2016, the midfielder is having better luck with Bursaspor.
With 21 league appearances so far this season, Saivet is running into form and with two goals in his last three games, is said to be going to be the key man in their relegation battle.
Bursaspor are only one point above the drop with eight games to go and Bursa Hakimiyet Gazetesi report that manager Samet Aybaba sees the Newcastle loan player as the man he is relying on now he has hit top form.
The manager playing Saivet in the number 10 role and the report saying that Aybaba wants to build the team around the Senegal international moving forward.
This all depends of course on firstly ensuring they avoid relegation, so fingers crossed that Henri Saivet can continue to impress and hopefully help then stay up.
The Mag – 16 August 2018:
Henri Saivet has passed his medical with Bursaspor, according to Turkish media on Monday morning.
Olay report that the Newcastle midfielder is expected to train with his new teammates tonight, once everything is officially signed off.
No indication as to whether the year long loan deal includes any buyout clause for a player Newcastle paid £5m for back in January 2016.However, Olay report that for the initial year’s loan, Bursaspor are paying NUFC 900,000 euros, which is approximately £800,000.
Henri Saivet speaking on Wednesday to beIN Sport:
“I am very happy that I came to Bursaspor, and it was very important for me to be transferred here for my career.
“I will be training with the team after the health check tomorrow.”Hopefully everything will be fine.”
