Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports, and has given his call on this Bournemouth v Newcastle match incident.

The incident in question happening a few minutes after the break.

Newcastle having scored on the stroke of half-time and looking good to win a Premier League away game for the first time in three months.

However, Mike Dean intervening and awarding Bournemouth a penalty, which when converted by Josh King understandably helped the home side to kick on and almost take the three points.

Dermot Gallagher insistent that the decision was a ‘good spot’ by Mike Dean.

Fernandez did put his arm on Nathan Ake but if that is enough for a penalty then you would have countless penalties every game. Rondon was pulled back by Callum Wilson at the other end but nothing given.

Whilst Boly’s arms around the neck of Martin Dubravka at Wolves was fifty times worse than anything Fernandez did on Saturday.

Dermot Gallagher speaking to Sky Sports:

“I think this one (Fernandez on Ake) is a penalty.

“The difference with this one is that he wraps his arms around his neck.

“I believe it is a good spot because time and time again we are seeing referees not give these.

“It’s quite clear he has got hold of him, so Mike Dean has given a penalty.

“He (Mike Dean) is in a great position.

“He (Fernandez) has got hold of him rather than it being two players grappling together.

“Ake makes no attempt to get hold of Fernandez.

“I think it (the rule) is (clear).

“By and large people accept what happens and in situations like that, the referee is duty bound to give a penalty.”
