Difficult to disagree with Mark Lawrenson this time: “Newcastle are flying…”
Mark Lawrenson has been studying the form ahead of the match later today at the London Stadium.
The home side having won only one of their last seven matches (all competitions) whilst it has been 13 points out of a possible 18 for Rafa Benitez and his players in their last six Premier League games.
Mark Lawrenson declaring that the Magpies are ‘flying at the moment’, having pulled themselves up to 13th ahead of this weekend’s fixtures.
Rafa Benitez has seen his team steadily improve and now even has more players than he knows what to do with, with the treatment room clearing the likes of Muto, Shelvey and Fernandez are even struggling to make the bench.
With Newcastle ‘on a roll’, Mark Lawrenson is predicting the ‘revival’ to continue with a 2-0 away victory in the Sky Sports Saturday teatime match.
Nothing gets past Lawrenson…and he correctly points out, how Rafa Benitez has found it pretty much boom and bust with Newcastle in the Premier League, that when the team do get momentum they can show rapid improvement.
Last season picked up four wins and two draws in a seven game run early on, which then suddenly became a run of only one point in nine games, before another bounce back of only three defeats (Liverpool and Man City (twice)) in 15 games as NUFC reached safety in early April.
This season, Mike Ashley ensured a very difficult start by starving the manager of funds and the players that did arrive, key ones such as Rondon came in late on and had no proper pre-season. Newcastle kicking off with no wins in the opening 10 games, then three wins in a row, only one win in nine, then now the current run of four wins and a draw in the last six.
With such a solid defence and now an attacking threat of Rondon AND Almiron, barring injuries, I don’t see Newcastle experiencing another dramatic descent into a bad run for the rest of the season.
A win at West Ham would be massive and all but ensure safety, 34 points with nine games to go and nine points clear of relegation if Cardiff lose at Wolves.
Rafa Benitez has said he will deal with the question of his future once safety is assured, it is all of our interests that this process is set in motion as quickly as possible.
Let us hope Mark Lawrenson is on the money this time.
Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport:
“West Ham are looking a much better side than they were at the start of the season.
“But Newcastle are flying at the moment, with four wins and a draw in their past six league matches.
“Magpies boss Rafa Benitez has gone on runs like this with Newcastle before.
“When he gets his team playing well and on a roll – and I can see their revival continuing on Saturday.
“Prediction is West Ham 0 Newcastle 2.”
