Compare what Rob Lee said today about Mike Ashley selling Newcastle to what he said in October 2017

Rob Lee has been speaking about Mike Ashley and Newcastle United today.

A superb NUFC player under Kevin Keegan, Lee is still a big Newcastle fan and always on the right side of the debate.

Asked about Mike Ashley and a possible sale of the club, Rob Lee stated  ‘He won’t sell’ and then backed that up with ‘I don’t think he wants to sell.’

The former Newcastle player thinks that Ashley enjoys upsetting the Newcastle fans and pretending to put the club up for sale any number of times has certainly done that.

When Mike Ashley claimed in December that a sale of the club was set to happen within weeks, we hoped for the best but knew from past experience how little we can trust what Ashley says.

Interestingly, I seemed to remember Rob Lee being on Talksport previously speaking about Mike Ashley selling the club and sure enough, he was on in October 2017 (see below) when Mike Ashley claimed he was going to sell and at the time Rob Lee, like the rest of us, wanted to think we could believe him.

One amusing aside is that back in October 2017 Rob Lee said about Mike Ashley ‘He seems to take one step forward and three steps back’, whilst today Rob Lee stated ‘He just seems to take one step forward and two massive giant steps back.’ So hopefully that is a sign of progress, two massive giant steps back, rather then the three steps back of October 2017…

Rob Lee speaking to Talksport – 19 March 2019:

“I met him (Mike Ashley) once with Alan Shearer, many many years ago and he was okay…

“He just seems to take one step forward and two massive giant steps back.

“He (Mike Ashley) seems to want to upset the Geordies.

“You think he’s doing alright, then he comes out with that statement at the end of the season a few years ago…’We are going to invest money, we are going do this and that, every penny we generate’, but he never does it.

“You said a little while ago he will be there (Newcastle) until the end of the season but he will be there much longer than that.

“He won’t sell.

“I don’t think he wants to sell.”

Rob Lee speaking to Talksport – 17 October 2017:

“It is good news if he actually sells it.

“It has a been long time now with Mike Ashley and maybe people will say he helped us through a stage where the club needed help, but now it needs to be put in someone else’s hands who has got the money to push the club forward and get it to where the fans want it to be, which is not relegation, promotion, relegation, promotion.

“It is being in the Premier League consistently and pushing for titles and trophies.

“He seems to take one step forward and three steps back with some of the decisions he makes and you are not made very welcome back at the club.

“Most of the ex-players don’t go back very often at all.

“You hope with a different regime, with different people in charge, you can push the club forward.

“It is a great city, it’s got great fans and for someone to come in and put some money in, it is a great buy.

“Rafa Benitez has hardly spent any money. Our record signing is still Michael Owen from 15 years ago. Watford have beaten that, Bournemouth have beaten that.

“Newcastle need to spend a lot of money to get them back to where they should be in the Premier League.”
