Clueless Jamie Redknapp brings up supposed Rafa Benitez negativity after 3-2 win over Everton

Jamie Redknapp has praised Newcastle United’s ‘incredible character’ after Saturday’s comeback.

Rafa Benitez’ team coming back to win 3-2 after going in 2-0 down at half-time.

Redknapp declaring about Newcastle…’They have been a joy to watch recently and in Ayoze Perez have a silky, clever forward who holds the ball up well.’

However, Jamie Redknapp has also used this excellent result and general upturn in results, especially at home, as a stick to beat Rafa Benitez with.

The former Liverpool and Spurs player claiming Saturday’s victory ‘…makes it even more frustrating that they set up so negatively against Chelsea there earlier in the season. On their day, they can take the fight to anyone.’

A bit of a bizarre comparison to make, referencing that game seven months ago.

The truth is, Rafa Benitez will pick a team and choose the tactics/formation for the occasion and the circumstances surrounding these two games were very different.

Mike Ashley had badly let Rafa Benitez down in the transfer market, insisting on a £20m+ profit and key players that were signed, especially Salomon Rondon, arrived so late in the transfer window they had very little or no pre-season with Newcastle United.

Facing four of the ‘big six’ in the opening five matches, points picked up in that opening period were always going to be a bonus.

Rafa Benitez had six players ruled out through injury for that Chelsea match in August as well as many others who weren’t 100% due to be ing signed late or given extra time due to World Cup involvement.

Salomon Rondon was once again instrumental in Saturday’s win over Everton but wasn’t fit back in August and managed only an hour before being replaced by Joselu.

Jonjo Shelvey played a big part as a sub in Saturday’s fightback but wasn’t available against Chelsea.

Miguel Almiron was always a worry for Everton on Saturday and his 30 yard shot led to the equaliser, he also wasn’t available for that Chelsea game.

As it happens, Newcastle only lost 2-1 to Chelsea back in August and that was due to a dubious penalty and cruel own goal three minutes from time. Very unfortunate not to get a point.

For what it is worth, I think Rafa Benitez got his selection/formation right for both matches but Chelsea are a far better team than Everton and whilst the luck went Newcastle’s way late on against Everton, it was the opposite on that day back in August.

Jame Redknapp selecting Ayoze Perez in his PL team of the week (see below).

Jamie Redknapp speaking to The Mail:

“Newcastle showed incredible character to battle back to beat Everton.

“They have been a joy to watch recently and in Ayoze Perez have a silky, clever forward who holds the ball up well.

“They have won their last five games at St James Park.

“Which makes it even more frustrating that they set up so negatively against Chelsea there earlier in the season.

“On their day, they can take the fight to anyone.”

Jamie Redknapp’s Premier League team of the week:

Leno (Arsenal)

Kolasinac (Arsenal)

Dunk (Brighton)

Boly (Wolves)

Valery (Southampton)

Camarasa (Cardiff)

Ward-Prowse (Southampton)

Mane (Liverpool)

Perez (Newcastle United)

Vardy (Leicester)

Sterling (Man City)
