Best Newcastle United overseas player in Premier League era? Almost dead heat as fans votes counted
The question we asked on Sunday was: ‘Who has been the best Newcastle United overseas player in the Premier League era?’
From 1992/93 onwards, who has been the outstanding NUFC overseas player?
We picked out 10 for Newcastle fans to make your selection from.
The ten selected having come from further afield than England, Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland the Republic of Ireland.
This poll was prompted by a BBC Sport one which asked: Who has been the best overseas player in the Premier League era?
A panel that included NUFC legend Alan Shearer and former Newcastle manager Ruud Gullit, picked out 13 possibles (no Newcastle players included).
The overwhelming winner when put to a public vote was Thierry Henry.
Who though was the choice of Newcastle fans in our NUFC only vote?
It very quickly became apparent that this was a two horse race…
42% Nobby Solano
38% David Ginola
6% Tino Asprilla
3% Demba Ba
2% Yohan Cabaye
1% Hatem Ben Arfa
1% Jonas Gutierrez
0% Gini Wijnaldum
The craft and guile of Nobby Solano just coming out on top of the brilliant dribbling skills of David Ginola.
The Peruvian was also at the club a lot longer than the Frenchman, plus the stats show he scored and created a lot more goals.
I still wouldn’t mind having both of them in the Newcastle team today…
