Tuesday night saw Sunderland reach Wembley.

In front of 6,699 paying spectators, a goal either side of half-time saw the Mackems beat Bristol Rovers to reach the Checkatrade Trophy Final.

Earlier in the season Newcastle fans got a lot of enjoyment out of the competition.

The anticipation that if the NUFC kids side could get through into the knockout stages they might face the Sunderland first team.

Then the reality of when it actually happened!

A humiliating moment for Sunderland fans, as their first team were playing a team of Newcastle United kids (Under 21s) on equal footing.

The result was irrelevant (although a win for the NUFC kids would have been unreal!), a real low for our neighbours. The Newcastle United 16 man (boy!) squad included six 18 years olds, six 19 year olds, two 20 year olds and two aged 21.

It became even more embarrassing when Sunderland refused to allow Newcastle fans the ticket allocation they were entitled to. The game going ahead in a stadium that was two thirds empty, only 2,780 Newcastle fans allowed amongst the sparse 16,654 crowd.

However, now they have got to the final, playing Portsmouth at Wembley on 31 March (day before Newcastle are away at Arsenal), how do you feel about it?

Are you jealous, or do you still think it is an embarrassment for Sunderland having to take part in this mickey mouse competition?

Or is it just a case of being happy to see all of the smaller lower league local clubs do well…?
