After Saturday results if Cardiff win then 6 clubs still at risk of last Premier League relegation slot

Whilst Huddersfield have gone and Fulham are shortly going to slip away, Saturday’s results have opened up the Premier League relegation race for the third spot.

All eyes are now on Cardiff.

In their last six games they have beaten Southampton, Bournemouth and West Ham, so they are not going down without a fight.

These are the results from Saturday and then how the Premier League table looks now:

Fulham 0 Manchester City 2

Brighton 0 Southampton 1

Burnley 2 Wolves 0

Crystal Palace 2 Huddersfield 0

Leicester 2 Bournemouth 0

Man Utd 2 Watford 1

West Ham 0 Everton 2

How the Premier League looks now outside the top six (points before each team then goal difference after):

44 Wolves 0

44 Leicester -1

43 Everton +3

43 Watford -3

42 West Ham -7

38 Bournemouth -15

36 Palace -3

35 Newcastle United -9

33 Brighton -11

33 Southampton -15

33 Burnley -22

28 Cardiff -30

17 Fulham -43

14 Huddersfield -41

As you can see, as well as Huddersfield already down, Fulham can only match Newcastle’s points but have a far worse goal difference.

Only 11 points separate 11 clubs from Wolves in 7th to Burnley in 17th.

Everybody talking about Wolves’ brilliant season but interesting to note that if Newcastle had beaten them home and away, which could have happened as nothing in either game, Newcastle would actually be level on points with them on 40 each.

What yesterday’s results have done is pack five clubs together above the drop zone only separated by three points.

These are the remaining matches this weekend.

Sunday matches

Cardiff v Chelsea (2.05pm)

Liverpool v Tottenham (4.30pm)

Monday match

Arsenal v Newcastle (8pm)

Cardiff now need a massive result to avoid being isolated, a win over Chelsea today would see them only two points off safety, bringing the five clubs above them, including Newcastle, back into the Premier League relegation battle.

Cardiff have the following games to end the season:

Chelsea (H), Man City (A), Burnley (A), Brighton (A), Liverpool (H), Fulham (A), Palace (H), Man Utd (A)

Looking at that, I think they need three of the four games against Burnley, Brighton, Palace and Fulham, if they do so they have a chance. That would give them 37 points – but obviously a shock result against Chelsea or one of three other top six sides they have to play, could be a game-changer.

Rafa Benitez has mentioned 38 points as a probable safety mark and with a far better goal difference than Cardiff, it would mean the Welsh side needing at least 11 points if NUFC reach 38 or better.

It would be nice to reach 38 points at Arsenal tomorrow night and then hope for Rafa’s (and Newcastle’s) future to be sorted out sooner rather than later.
