Ryan Bennett “You look at Newcastle and it’s a massive club. There’s always that expectation there…”
Ryan Bennett has been talking ahead of the game against Newcastle United.
The Wolves defender has been on some journey since joining Wolves only 18 months ago and after winning promotion with his new club last season, now finds himself in seventh spot in the Premier League, having played 24 of their 25 games.
As for Monday’s opponents he declares: ‘You look at Newcastle and it’s a massive club. There’s always that expectation there, even now the fans believe they are not doing as well as they think they should be.’
Well, going into the game at Molineux outside the relegation zone only on goal difference, yes, fair to say Newcastle fans think things should be better than this.
Ryan Bennett seemingly, at least partly, going down the path of unrealistic expectations of the supporters at Newcastle…
He also adds ‘But you go there and it’s similar to us; if you start well as an away team, the fans will be on the players’ backs.’
Bennett played in the 2-1 win for Wolves in December, a last minute goal deciding it.
However, he also played against Newcastle for Norwich a number of times, the last two being interesting ones.
Ryan Bennett playing when Newcastle lost 3-2 in a pivotal relegation game at Carrow Road back in 2016, both clubs ending up going down.
Then only months later, Bennett himself was at the heart of a dramatic turnaround at St James Park.
Newcastle trailed 3-1 then pulled it back to 3-2 with 20 minutes left.
However, many Norwich fans blamed their manager when taking off goalscorer and arguably best player on the night, Jacob Murphy (later to join Newcastle), and replaced him with defender Ryan Bennett with 11 minutes to go.
The visiting fans felt this simply encouraged Newcastle to go all out attack and sure enough two goals in added time completed a 4-3 turnaround. An important early step towards Newcastle’s eventual promotion as champions.
When Newcastle went up as champions in May 2017 and Ryan Bennett was released by Norwich and then joined Wolves as a free agent, little could he, or fans of Wolves, imagine where they would end up in February 2019.
Nor indeed could Newcastle supporters have forecast the crazy happenings at St James Park in this same time period, although sadly, after a decade of Mike Ashley already behind them, maybe it was all too predictable.
Ryan Bennett talking to the official club site:
“You look at Newcastle and it’s a massive club.
“There’s always that expectation there, even now the fans believe they are not doing as well as they think they should be.
“But you go there and it’s similar to us; if you start well as an away team, the fans will be on the players’ backs.
“There’s also things going on behind the scenes that people are not too happy about [at Newcastle], but you look at some of the signings they’ve made, some of the sorts of contracts the players are on there, and it’s still a massive club and it’s going to be a tough game.
“It’s been a good season so far but we set the standard last year and it’s just continued into this season.
“When I came into the club there was a lot of change and a lot of turnaround, but this is all I’ve known since I’ve been here.
“There has always been that buzz around the place, with people expecting big things and fortunately up to this point we’ve provided that, and we just need to keep continuing to do that.”
