A happy and relieved Rafa Benitez was full of praise for his team after the final whistle.

After being well on top in the first 20 minutes, Newcastle then played the final 70 minutes with a man advantage after Tommy Smith’s sending off.

New boy Miguel Almiron was centre of attention and Rafa declared: ‘Everything we have seen is what we were expecting from him.’

A lively performance saw the Paraguayan hit the post and impress with his pace and direct running.

Rafa Benitez though accepting that now Almiron won’t be an unknown quantity for opponents…’Obviously, the defenders from the other teams will know him a little bit better now and it will be more difficult for him.’

A satisfctory day all round and the Newcastle boss had special mention for man of the match Sean Longstaff.

The manager stating ‘Sean Longstaff is doing well and has the support of the players around him. He is quite focused, is a good lad and a good professional. He is trying to learn and is doing well. Hopefully he can do well for a while.’

Newcastle fans now very much looking forward to Tuesday night and the visit of Burnley.

Rafa Benitez:

“Everything we have seen is what we were expecting from him [Miguel Almiron].

“Obviously, the defenders from the other teams will know him a little bit better now and it will be more difficult for him.

“But still, he is someone who is working really hard, so I think he can do well.

“Now he has to learn in the Premier League to understand what the physicality of the game means here, but I think he has the right mentality.

“He has energy, he is running all over the pitch, he is trying to link with other players.

“I think it was a great game for Miguel Almiron and the fans to enjoy.

“Sean Longstaff is doing well and has the support of the players around him.

“He is quite focused, is a good lad and a good professional. He is trying to learn and is doing well.

“Hopefully he can do well for a while.

“I was really pleased with the performance of the players.

“Obviously it was more difficult for them with ten players but they still had chances at the beginning.

“We created a lot of chances – I think we hit the crossbar or the post four times.

“We needed to win and we won well.

“It does not matter for me whether we pick up three points at home or away, but as we play Burnley next at home, hopefully we can carry our good home run.”
