Wednesday has brought double dismal FA Cup reminder for Newcastle United
The FA Cup and Newcastle United don’t sit together well in the same sentence.
Very difficult to believe that once upon a time, the Magpies were the club most associated with the competition, in a good way!
Never mind those days of the 1950s and actually winning it, easy to forget that just competing can be an adventure as well.
Today (20 February) is a vivid reminder of that.
On this day in 2000, Newcastle United won 3-2 at Tranmere Rovers to qualify for the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
Then in 2005 on this day, Newcastle beat Chelsea 1-0 to also go into the semi final.
Those two FA Cup runs were:
2000 FA Cup:
3rd Tottenham 1 Newcastle 1
3rd replay Newcastle 6 Tottenham 1 (Ginola got the consolation goal)
4th Newcastle 4 Sheffield United 1
5th Blackburn 1 Newcastle 2
6th Tranmere 2 Newcastle 3
Semi-Final Newcastle 1 Chelsea 2
2005 FA Cup:
3rd Yeading 0 Newcastle 2
4th Newcastle 3 Coventry 1
5th Newcastle 1 Chelsea 0
6th Newcastle 1 Tottenham 0
Semi-final Newcastle 1 Man Utd 4
Yes, obviously it would have been great to win the whole thing but there were some great games/moments in these FA Cup runs and it gave you a chance to dream.
In 2000 we had that 6-1 hammering of Tottenham and of course the win at Tranmere to take us to a Wembley semi-final. Plus Robert Lee scoring against Chelsea in that semi-final was such a brilliant moment.
In 2005, that win over Chelsea was huge, they won the Premier League that season by 12 points!
Kluivert scoring the only goal of the game against both Chelsea and Spurs that season.
These past 13 seasons Newcastle have failed to reach the fifth round.
The last 12 of those under Mike Ashley and these are the only FA Cup games won in that time.
Blackburn 2 Newcastle 4 – 15 January 2019 (Third round replay)
Newcastle 3 Luton 1 – 6 January 2018
Newcastle 3 Birmingham 1 – 18 January 2017 (Third round replay)
Newcastle 2 Blackburn 1 – 7 January 2012
Newcastle 3 Plymouth 0 – 13 January 2010 (Third round replay)
Newcastle 4 Stoke 1 – 16 January 2008 (Third round replay)
The only one of those games against a team in the same division was in 2012 and Blackburn ended up relegated.
This is how bad it has been, there hasn’t been a single FA Cup match under Ashley when you have really celebrated a massive win.
Yes, it was a brilliant moment/goal when Ben Arfa scored against Blackburn, but they (Rovers) were rubbish.
