Rafa Benitez verdict: “Wolves have been really lucky”

Rafa Benitez will have woken up in his native Spain this morning, ruing the two points that have slipped away.

The Newcastle boss declaring ‘We had the three points and then to concede this way is difficult…’

Deep into injury time, the referee finding some extra extra time from somewhere, then the final insult when Willy Boly wrapped his arms around Dubravka’s neck, impeding the Newcastle keeper as he scored the equaliser.

Little wonder Rafa Benitez believes ‘Wolves have been really lucky’, particularly when you take into consideration how many decisions by referees have gone against Newcastle in recent times.

Just over six weeks ago Graham Scott decided it was a clear foul when Mo Salah threw himself to the ground in the Newcastle penalty area at Anfield, yet last night at Wolves the same referee doesn’t give the foul on Dubravka.

It is laughable really.

Martin Dubravka thinks he should have had more protection from the referee and Rafa Benitez agrees…’In England they don’t understand the rules.’

The Newcastle boss now has the rest of this week in Spain for warm weather training before a friendly with CSKA Moscow on Saturday.

A must win game awaits in 11 days time, Huddersfield have to be beaten, regardless of any lack of help from match officials.

Rafa Benitez:

“In England they don’t understand the rules.

“I can say many things but it will not change anything…

“I didn’t like the challenge at the end, you have to protect the keeper.

“We have been here for years and it’s still very difficult to explain that.

“Martin was talking about more protection.

“Jamaal (Lascelles) was saying that maybe Martin could deal with the cross in another way.

“It is a bad way to concede.

“We have one more point but it is a pity because we could have had three.

“I was not happy with some decisions from the referee but overall he was fine.

“We had the three points and then to concede this way is difficult.

“We conceded in the first game [against Wolves] in the last minute [at St James Park] and we concede today.

“So Wolves have been really lucky.

“Hopefully, it will be really important this point.

“Again, I will say it is a pity when you have done so well.

“To go to the end and then to lose two points in this way…

“But still, the performance of the team was quite good.”
