Rafa Benitez tells Sky Sports in exclusive that signing Miguel Almiron hasn’t made everything alright now
In an exclusive with Sky Sports, Rafa Benitez has been quizzed about his future.
Only three months to go until the third and final season of his contract ends but the Newcastle manager indicated that a lot more has to happen before he’ll be agreeing to stay on under Mike Ashley.
Rafa Benitez declaring ‘Obviously one or two signings at the end of the transfer window doesn’t change everything.’
Whilst the manager obviously welcomes the Miguel Almiron signing, buying one player isn’t a cure all for the manager or the supporters.
When we asked Newcastle fans whether Rafa Benitez should now be expected to sign a contract extension after the January transfer action, a massive 88% said no.
A Newcastle squad that hasn’t been properly strengthened in any of the previous four windows and even arguably in this one, considering Rafa had wanted/needed four players and instead got Almiron and a cheap and cheerful loan left-back.
No wonder Rafa Benitez added: “We are a little bit better than before but we still have to talk about a lot of things if we want to move forward.’
Even when he did get these signings, the manager had to wait until the very last day of January for the deals to be done, not exactly suggesting a whole lot has changed considering Newcastle are deep in a relegation battle and needed signings ASAP in the window, so they could be integrated into the squad and be available for as many games as possible.
The simple fact is, that Newcastle go into this Wolves match only above the drop zone on goal difference and indeed would have been three points off safety, if not for the very unexpected win over Manchester City.
Ever the pragmatist, once the window closes Rafa just gets his head down and concentrates on the job in hand, as outside the transfer windows he is wasting his time exposing the lack of support he gets from Mike Ashley.
Benitez says that it is these next three months at the moment that are ‘really important for the future’…
Bottom line is, that whether Rafa ends up staying or leaving in the summer, he doesn’t want another relegation on his CV, even though of course he was left with an almost impossible job of preventing that last one, due to Mike Ashley waiting until only 10 games to go when belatedly giving McClaren the boot.
Rafa Benitez talking to Sky Sports:
“Obviously one or two signings at the end of the transfer window doesn’t change everything.
“We are a little bit better than before but we still have to talk about a lot of things if we want to move forward.
“That [Rafa’s future] is something we will have plenty of time to talk about.
“[These next few months are] really important for the future.
“The main thing is to be sure that you win the games you have to win and stay in the Premier League then the future is great.
“But you have to concentrate on that, because if you lose energy talking about other things in future interviews, we will make a mistake.
[Asked about Newcastle fans wanting to know if he will be extending his contract]:
“I know where fans are coming from.
“I was coming from Liverpool by train the other day and the fans were asking me the same question.
“The point is, you have to do what is best for your team and at the moment, the best thing we can do is to focus and concentrate on that.
“Every game is a final for us, so we cannot waste energy on other thoughts.
“We have to concentrate on the games, we will have plenty of time for other things.”
