Paul Merson says Rafa Benitex can ‘Relax Now’ at Newcastle United after making this change

Paul Merson has been evaluating Newcastle United under Rafa Benitez.

The former Middlesbrough player believing there has been a sea change at St James Park.

Paul Merson declaring ‘When you often see Rafa Benitez’s side set up, they’re out to not lose before they win, but now he has these three up front. Rondon, Perez and Almiron – he has players who can make things happen.’

It is early days and rock bottom Huddersfield were woeful and had to play with 10 men for 70 minutes BUT regardless of that, Newcastle did look far better and threatening, especially in the 20 minutes before the red card.

Back in 2001, Sir Bobby Robson bought Craig Bellamy and Laurent Robert, who helped transform the team.

Newcastle had some great players already in Shearer, Speeed, Given, Solano and others, but the addition of that pair brought the best out of everybody, gave the team what was missing. Newcastle going from lower mid-table going nowhere and suddenly finishing 4th, 3rd and 5th and playing Champions League football.

Obviously Newcastle don’t have players as good as that Sir Bobby team but we do have some very good players, certainly in defence.

The team were crying out for money to be spent on creativity and goals, something almost impossible to find on the cheap.

Paul Merson say about Rafa Benitez: ‘He can relax now, they’re a bit more open and entertaining.’

Miguel Almiron won’t single-handedly propel Newcastle to top four and Champions League football but he has already suggested he can help NUFC pull in better results AND play better football.

First step is to get to safety as soon as possible and then convince Rafa Benitez to stay, then who knows, if he is backed with a few more modern era priced signings then just maybe Newcastle United can start and head in the right direction.

As for tonight, Paul Merson predicts a 2-1 home win, which would take Newcastle to 13th.

A defeat could see Rafa’s team only two points above relegation if Southampton and Cardiff win their midweek home games.

Burnley have just beaten Spurs and are undefeated for nine weeks in the Premier League.

Everything to play for in this tough match.

Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:

“Burnley have picked up and Newcastle looked really lively against Huddersfield.

“I’m going to tip Newcastle to steal it; Longstaff looked decent and the front three look energetic.

“When you often see Rafa Benitez’s side set up, they’re out to not lose before they win, but now he has these three up front.

“Rondon, Perez and Almiron – he has players who can make things happen.

“Those three are definitely as good as anyone in the bottom half.

“He can relax now, they’re a bit more open and entertaining.

“Prediction is Newcastle 2 Burnley 1.”
