Paul Merson passes judgement on Miguel Almiron
Paul Merson has been reflecting on Newcastle’s win over Huddersfield.
Merson was covering the game for Sky Sports and one player in particular caught his eye.
Paul Merson on that moment early on when Miguel Almiron burst through and was faced with a one on one: ‘On your home debut, you are going through one on one with the keeper, there are fifty/sixty thousand people there, you have been bought for a lot of money and he dinks it!’
I think that if Almiron had elected to go around the keeper then he would definitely have scored. However, as Merson says, it was brilliant to see the Paraguayan have the confidence to do the unexpected…and to be fair, he was massively unlucky to see it hit the post AND bounce awkwardly out as it eluded him when he followed the shot in.
The overall Paul Merson verdict was: ‘I think they have had a right result here, Newcastle have.’
You try not to make too much of a player’ first start, good or bad, but certainly Almiron’s trickery, pace and direct running were a totally different level to what Newcastle fans have watched in recent seasons.
Great to see he has a good work ethic as well, something essential surely with Rafa Benitez as manager.
Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:
“This lad, Almiron, looks a decent player.
“He went through, one on one, at the start.
“A great touch, cut across the defender so he can’t bring him down, he then just chips it over the keeper.
“It hasn’t gone in but to have the bottle to do that…
“On your home debut, you are going through one on one with the keeper, there are fifty/sixty thousand people there, you have been bought for a lot of money and he dinks it!
“I think he is a good player.
“I think they have had a right result here, Newcastle have.
“He has got good vision, he runs with the ball, he is willing to work.
“He looks like one of those who is very grateful to be in the Premier League and he is going to take his chance.
“He’s going to enjoy it.”
