Paul Merson knee jerk reaction on Newcastle United
Paul Merson has been talking about Newcastle United ahead of their game against Huddersfield.
A victory for Rafa’s team would give Newcastle their first double of the season after the rather fortunate win in December, when Huddersfield dominated but provided overwhelming evidence as to why they have now scored only 14 goals in 26 games. The lowest of any club in the big five European leagues.
In his usual knee jerk way, involving minimal/no research, Paul Merson has given his opinion on the now current condition of Newcastle United.
Merson saying the Magpies have ‘turned a bit of a corner recently’ and he bases that on getting results in games where they weren’t expected to.
The reality is that Paul Merson is simply talking about the surprise win over Manchester City.
Since November, Newcastle have played 13 Premier League games and won only three, as well as Man City, the other two were against two of the three relegation favourites, Cardiff and Huddersfield.
Obviously the points taken off Pep Guardiola are immeasurably massive in terms of a bonus but a recent Sky Sports feature showed what any NUFC safety this season will be based on.
In games against the other seven fighting relegation, Newcastle have averaged 1.63 points per game and have three wins, four draws and just the one defeat (v Brighton).
Six of the final 12 matches are against bottom eight clubs, four of them at home, if Newcastle keep on averaging 1.63 points from those games it would take us to 35 points, regardless of what happens in the other six matches.
Paul Merson thinks it might be a struggle against Huddersfield, who have one point from their last 13 matches (Newcastle have 13 points from last 13), but predicting a 2-0 home win.
Hopefully he is at least right about this one.
Paul Merson talking to Sky Sports:
“This is a must-win game for Newcastle.
“They have turned a bit of a corner recently but they have been playing games where they haven’t been expected to win and they have got results.
“Now they have to turn up and win the game, which is a lot harder sometimes.
“When you are not expected to win, you can try and grind out a draw, but this could be a dangerous game for Newcastle.
“But with the run that Huddersfield have been on, I think Newcastle will win.
“Prediction is Newcastle 2 Huddersfield 0.”
