Newcastle United star needs 3 more appearances to trigger new contract

Mohamed Diame last started a Premier League game in the 2-0 home defeat to Manchester United.

The midfielder explaining that he was forced off in that match with what was only a minor groin problem and was fine after a few days and back in training.

However, an accident in training saw him kicked on the foot and pick up a crack on his fifth metatarsal.

In his absence, both Sean Longstaff and Isaac Hayden have stepped it up and proved to be a very good partnership in a difficult run of games.

Monday night saw Mohamed Diame return to action, as a late sub he was in time to watch on as Wolves scored that controversial late equaliser.

That made it 22 Premier League appearances so far and with 12 games remaining, the Shields Gazette have now revealed that Diame needs to feature in three more to automatically trigger a new deal, which would give an extra year’s extension.

They add that their information is that the midfielder is actually hoping to get a new two year deal, rather than just a one year extension.

With variable form this season and the fact he would turn 34 during a new two year contract, makes that sound very unlikely, surely a one year bonus stay is the best he can hope for.

Mohamed Diame:

“It’s difficult to be outside the pitch.

“Watching the game from the stand is not easy.

“Now I’m back, I hope I can help the team.

“I will give it everything to help the team and make sure that we get our target as soon as possible.

“I had a crack on my bone in my fifth metatarsal.

“The Manchester United game was just my groin and I was fine after two or three days.

“At the training during the week, I received a kick on my foot and I had a crack on the bone, that is why I was away for so long.

“I have been watching them from the stand, seeing them work really hard.

“The team’s still fighting and we know that we’ll be fighting until the end.

“I’m here to help, and I will give everything to make sure we get our target.

“Belief is important and two weeks ago we showed that we can beat any team [when beating Man City 2-1].

“We have to fight together, we need this attitude and team spirit we had last season and this season and I’m pretty sure we will do it.

“The team has been working well in the last three games and we need to keep going.

“The attitude was good and [now] we try to not concede any more in the last minute [again].”
