Newcastle United should be part of Premier League ‘Big Seven’ – Brilliant from Robbie Earle

Robbie Earle might have been part of the Wimbledon ‘Crazy Gang’ in his playing days but he speaks a lot of sense these days as a TV pundit.

He covers/commentates on Premier League football over in North America for NBCSN.

On Tuesday night he had some interesting views on Newcastle United, after watching Rafa’s side beat Burnley, rising to 13th after a fourth home victory in a row.

Robbie Earle declaring: ‘Rafa Benitez being linked to Leicester City job, tells you how badly Newcastle United is being run, because under no circumstances should a manager be manager of Newcastle and then think about going to Leicester City. If this club is run twenty five per cent correctly, it is a top ten team.’

Thankfully Brendan Rodgers has now been appointed by Leicester but Robbie Earle is right on the money, no disrespect to Leicester or any number of clubs, but it is a disgrace the way Mike Ashley has dragged Newcastle United down.

Robbie Earle again right on the money when he says: ‘As I’m seeing those [Newcastle] fans at the end, standing and clapping, and love their football club. I’m thinking, you know what, in this league there should be a big seven.’

Clearly Rafa Benitez believes Newcastle should be part of a ‘big seven’ in the Premier League, he saw the potential despite the mess the club was in three years ago.

That potential has never gone away, with the obvious big shame being that Mike Ashley hasn’t [gone away].

Ashley’s big ‘success’ has been to convince so much of the lazy media, and indeed many Newcastle fans, that there is no way NUFC can compete towards the top again.

Quite remarkable when you consider what happened at the club in the 14 years before Ashley took over Newcastle United.

The majority of seasons playing in Europe, finishing second (twice) in the Premier League, third (twice), fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh in those 14 seasons, as well as two FA Cup finals and a UEFA Cup semi-final.

Nobody should think it will be easy but why shouldn’t you think that a manager such as Rafa Benitez, with Newcastle’s fanbase and ambitious owners, couldn’t help the club grow year on year and narrow the gap to those at the top, then with a bit of luck who knows…?

Robbie Earle talking on NBCSN:

“The biggest compliment I can give them [Newcastle] is mirroring last season when finishing tenth in the league and starting the season badly again.

“It is all down to Rafa Benitez.

“As much down to defence as it is goals.

“Only 34 goals conceded, that is less than Manchester United and Arsenal.

“As I’m seeing those [Newcastle] fans at the end, standing and clapping, and love their football club.

“I’m thinking, you know what, in this league there should be a big seven.

“There is a big six and there should be Newcastle.

“Rafa Benitez being linked to Leicester City job, tells you how badly Newcastle United is being run, because under no circumstances should a manager be manager of Newcastle and then think about going to Leicester City.

“If this club is run twenty five per cent correctly, it is a top ten team.”
