Newcastle 2 Huddersfield 0 – Instant United fan/writer reaction to Saturday’s win

Newcastle 2 Huddersfield 0  – Saturday 23 February 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle dominated both before and after Huddersfield had Tommy Smith sent off in the first half.

A 2-0 win but could and should have been many more, the away keeper played well, Newcastle hit the woodwork at least four times, whilst some of the finishing was poor.

Jamie Smith:

“This game was mint.

“2-0 looks narrow against a practically relegated side with ten men, but it doesn’t tell the story of dominance, free-flowing attacking play, 3 hits of the woodwork and a stunning display by Lossl in the Town goal.

“Almiron has made an immense difference with his constant running and the attacking options it gives.

“He was brilliant but Longstaff man of the match for me.

“We have the beginnings of a team, hopefully it continues Tuesday and we’re well on the way to forgetting relegation and fearing how badly it all falls apart in the summer.”

David Punton:

“Two goals, 29 attempts on goal, an excellent debut from Miguel Almiron and another assured day for young Sean Longstaff.

“We had to win that game and the players have executed the task perfectly, how was it not more? We’ve rattled the woodwork to death there today.

“Perez and Rondon got the goals early in that second half when there was maybe a slight worry the ten man Terriers would cling on grimly.

“Tommy Smith’s tackle wasn’t great and the straight red was correct. It was then all about getting the job done.

“On we got to Burnley.

“The final word today for the starting debut of record signing, Almiron. He looks just what was needed.

“Pace. Creativity and an eye for goal. He was unlucky not to get on the score sheet. That first goal will come. We can’t wait.”

Paul Patterson:

“Can’t quite believe that a side can have that many shots and only score two goals.

“Still, cracking display from Almiron.

“Let’s stuff Burnley and get ourselves all but safe.”

Jonathan Drape-Comyn:

“A great win, much needed.

“Takes the pressure off over the next few games to an extent (imagine the pressure on Burnley game if we didn’t win today).

“Almiron brilliant, breath of fresh air.

“Rondon brilliant, Longstaff brilliant.”

Nat Seaton:

“A precious 2-0 win and it could / should have been a bigger score.

“A great home debut from Almiron, hopefully he’ll turn out to be a great signing, on first sighting the signs look good.

“Bring on Tuesday night when hopefully a repeat of a good team performance will bring us another precious 3 points.”

Brian Standen:

“Wow. A win and entertainment.

“Plenty promise and great debut for Almiron.

“A few players visibly lifted their game today and it’s all good.

“Now if only we could spend big money on a forward because defence and midfield looks promising.

“Great day.”

Toon Bano:

“Take it.

“Move on.”
