Newcastle 2 Burnley 0  – Tuesday 26 February 8pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle going two up in the first alf.

A wonderful strike from distance by Fabian Schar and then a special moment when Sean Longstaff scored his first ever first team NUFC goal.

An excellent night.

Jamie Smith:

“Great result in a week where things are really looking up.

“Totally nullified Burnley’s kickabilly brand of bullyball with another display of open passing football.

“Not as flash as Saturday but we can seriously start looking up instead of down.

“Just tick the scoreboard over to the tune of a couple more wins and it’s safety sorted and thoughts can turn to the future…”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“What is going on, why is it so enjoyable at SJP these days?

“Survived the aerial bombardment brilliantly towards the end, although Crouch had me worried.

“Newcastle were all excellent again, thought Hayden and Lejune were outstanding in particular, but the entire 11 did their part.

“I still feel we have to score first to really look like winning, but make no mistake, Rafa has built a very decent side here.”

David Punton:

“Take your pick from the possible headlines – a world class goal from Fabian Schar or another chapter in the Sean Longstaff fairytale.

“These were the two stand out moments of a first half that was enough to win this crucial game. We’re looking up the table now. The gloom is lifting.

“The second half was a slog but they got there. A huge sigh of relief and a big cheer. We have one hand on Premier League survival.

“Schar’s long range goal was a thing of beauty, but it’s the youngster from North Shields with his first goal for the first team that put the seals on it.

“What a story for Longstaff. It’s magnificent. He’s a cracking player.”

Paul Patterson:

“2-0 and we got to give Rafa, Almiron and Super Sean a standing ovation.

“Happy days.”

Kevin Christie:

“Solid win and another very welcome three points. A professional and controlled performance that will have pleased Rafa no end.

“Phenomenal strike from Schar, who was immense at the back once again alongside Lascelles and Lejeune.

“Brilliant performance from Dubravka too – solid handling, great anticipation and a couple of important saves.

“Almirón was bright once again and looks a very useful addition.

“Really looking forward to seeing more of him. Pleased for Longstaff too – yet another tidy performance and a nice goal.

“Burnley never showed up but we can only beat what’s in front of us. Tougher tests lie ahead but let’s just enjoy tonight for now!”

Nat Seaton:

“Another good home win and 3 more precious points.

“Defended well when we had to and grabbed a couple of goals without playing as well as we did on Saturday.

“Let’s keep it going at West Ham this weekend…”

Ben Cooper:

“Dull stuff but a welcome 3 points.

“Once the second goal went in they should have stopped the game, Burnley were so awful the points were in the bag.

“Schar’s goal was a belter.”

Brian Standen:

“Smiles, excitement, possibilities!

“All things I saw before AND after!

“Look, let’s be honest , nothing can undo the Ashley scepticism but at last some smiles, so enjoy.

“Good performances again across the park but for me Martin Dubravka set the tone, after the cheating Wolves debacle – EVERY ball was his!

“Great 3 man defence and WOW Schar!

“Enjoy the moment – potential is there.”

Toon Bano:

“We are playing with so much confidence now.

“Not a chance of going down and now looking at repeating last season’s top half finish.

“Amazing what can happen when you give the club a tiny bit of investment.

“Longstaff is an instant hero. A local hero. Finally.”
