Mohamed Diame may need to play 75% of games to get new contract but is anybody really bothered?
After a month on the sidelines, Mohamed Diame returned to action as a late sub in the draw at Wolves.
It was then reported that the midfielder needed another four Premier League starts (to make it 25) this season to trigger an automatic one year extension to his current deal.
Though it was claimed the player himself wants a new two year deal.
However, a new report has claimed that Mohamed Diame may actually start 75% of Newcastle’ remaining games, to trigger this automatic one year minimum extension.
The Chronicle claiming (see below) that the midfielder might actually have to start at least nine of these final twelve Premier League game, to make it up to 30 starts for the season.
I don’t know what anybody else thinks but is anybody seriously bothered whether Diame gets any kind of extended stay?
Apart from a purple patch between February and April 2018, covering around eight or so games, he hasn’t been great. In fact, until that run to safety early last year, he was largely seen as a bit of a joke.
Very average in the Championship and only scoring goals and getting three assists, despite playing in an advanced position (scored 10 and got four assists the season before for Hull in the second tier), Mohamed Diame was a bit of a liability in the eyes of most fans.
Last season he managed two goals and no assists, whist this current season there has not been a single goal or assist. Some people might say that isn’t his job but in a team with so few goals in it, a lot of players appear to be largely excused this responsibility.
He turns 32 in June and if getting another year, he would turn 33 before it was at an end.
I don’t know about you but if Newcastle are in the Premier League next season, we should be looking to have central midfielders who can give us far more than Mohamed Diame.
I think Shelvey, Ki and Longstaff are all better players and that is even without the definite need, in my opinion, to bring in at least one signing who is better than any of them.
It feels to me as though many Newcastle fans have such low expectations these days, they feel a desperate need to believe some of our current players are a lot better than they really are.
‘Diame, like Benitez, is into the final six months of his contract – and, if he is to earn a new deal, he needs to start an unspecified number of league games during the 2018/19 campaign to automatically trigger an extension.
‘There have been some suggestions it is 25 starts he needs, meaning he would only need to be named in four further XIs in United’s remaining 12 fixtures this term.
‘But sources have suggested it could be closer to 30 games.’
