Newcastle fans have been regularly told that Mike Ashley is ensuring that they are paying some of the lowest ticket prices in the Premier League.
The message, at least partly, is that whilst the football might be rubbish, what can you expect when you are only paying this.
Like so much of what we are told though by Mike Ashley and his minions, when you scratch away the surface, it tells a different story.
The Ashley spin that the newspapers slavishly reproduce, simply isn’t true.
Newcastle United’s ticket prices have been consistently amongst the highest in the Premier League, for those clubs outside the top six, although even most Manchester City fans for example pay less than their Newcastle equivalents.
Last summer (2018) saw one of the most outrageous Mike Ashley acts yet.
At the same time as insisting on a £20m+ profit in the transfer market, the NUFC owner also put up the prices in all four stands at St James Park.
Some season ticket holders even ended up paying over 20% more compared to in 2017/18.
As for Newcastle fans who pay match by match, it makes grim reading, especially when you consider what is being charged compared to the lack of investment in the squad year after year, as well as the club’s infrastructure (SJP, Academy, Training ground etc).

In the past, Newcastle fans showed they were happy to pay ambitious ticket prices when supporting an ambitious club.
However, that is anything but the case under Mike Ashley.
