Michael Owen predicts Wolves v Newcastle United
Michael Owen has been looking ahead to Molineux on Monday night.
The former Newcastle club record signing…seeing it as a bit of an attack against defence scenario.
Michael Owen pointing out that Wolves have scored 10 goals in their last three Premier League matches: a 3-1 win at Everton and home victories over West Ham (3-0) and Leicester (4-3).
Then contrasting that with Rafa’s organised defence allowing only two goals conceded in their last three PL games, a 3-0 win over Cardiff, then against two of the top three, a 2-1 win over Man City and 1-0 defeat at Wembley, which could/should have been 0-0 if not for a rare error from Martin Dubravka.
The reality is though that Wolves are not a free scoring team and their relative success this season has been based on a solid defence. Before these 10 goals in the last 3 games, they had only managed 21 in the opening 22 games.
Their home record as well, isn’t particularly great and indeed was the worst in the top half before those last two wins at Molineux.
Nuno’s team in their first 11 home games had won 4 drawn 2 lost 5 and only scored 12 goals in their opening 11 matches in front of their own fans. A bit like Newcastle, they had arguably been better away from home, their strength in counter-attacking, the same as Rafa’s team, although admittedly Wolves have invested a whole lot more money in better players to achieve this.
At home, Wolves have already lost to Watford, Spurs, Palace, Liverpool and Huddersfield, as well as losing at Cardiff.
In contrast, they have also pulled off great results this season in beating Chelsea and Tottenham, as well as drawing with Man City, Man Utd and Arsenal.
Michael Owen tips Wolves to win but there to be under three goals in the match. Despite the relative goal glut for Wolves in these last three matches, under three goals in this game is probably a fair prediction.
Newcastle were at least as good as Wolves in the game at St James Park and gifted the away win in the final seconds.
We all hope that Miguel Almiron can lift the team going forward but regardless of him I fancy Newcastle to get at least a point at an inconsistent Wolves. They have got some good flair players but Rafa Benitez as consistently shown he can come up with a plan against any team to make it difficult for them, whilst recent games suggest that there is a growing goal threat building (even if slowly) for the Magpies as well.
Michael Owen talking to BetVictor:
“Wolves have scored three or more goals in their last three PL games, but Newcastle have shown in recent games just how well organised and resilient the Magpies are under Rafa Benitez.
“Wolves look favourites to end the season top of the league without the “big-six” and they have had a very good first-season back in the elite league of English football.
“Whether they can take the next step and break into the top six next term is up for debate.
“But the Molineux outfit should be proud of what they have achieved so far this term and I feel they will keep the points against United.
“Tip: Wolves to win and under 2.5 goals at 12/5.”
